Anyone ever experience that? Fortunately I was about to land the Bell 47 when it just went pow and the cabin filled with smoke. Turns out, the bolt going thru the muffler broke and the whole thing came apart. Got it JB welded together now, will see how that works.

All of my Kyosho mufflers did that. I think I went through about 4 bolts before I finally created a hand-made solution for the problem.

The issue is the differing expansion coefficients for the steel bolt and the aluminum muffler. The aluminum expands more, causing extreme stress on the bolt. If you keep the bolt somewhat loose when cold, it'll tighten up as the muffler heats up, but it'll also leak when cold.

I finally gave up. I got a piece of threaded brass rod, drilled out the muffler holes to fit and tightened it down with two stainless nuts on each end. The brass is softer and has an expansion coefficient closer to that of aluminum. This fix held for several seasons. (I'm using a Century scale muffler now).

Threaded brass rod can be found at most hardware stores.

I really like the way this muffler fits on my Bell 47. It is adjustable and I have it pointed to the front with the exhaust pointed down. Once I got it where I wanted it then I put JB weld at all the swivel points and around the ends of the bolt. Now that it has come apart I have re-JB welded it and think it will be better now because there is more area welded where the two halves go together.
Will see..........................Dave

thats strange that you guys would go through so many bolts, i've been using the same one for about 3 years, and it was several years old when i got it. do you think you guys are tightening the bolt too much and putting too much stress on it?

IF you can, you could take the muffler to a welder and get them to put a small tack or two on it at the seam, enough to hold it, but if you ever need to take it apart for some reason, you can dremel the tacks off. JB weld on a muffler may not last, the oil, vibrations and high/low temps i would think will make it crack and come apart again.

The JB Weld should hold up. I use to use it on my 1/8th scale buggy muffler around the the pressure fitting. Never had a problem with it breaking off or cracking.
