I guess I dropped enough hints that I really wanted to start flying RC heli's as my wife got me a micro heli for my birthday. Unfortunately I did not give her the name brand I wanted but I will take what I can get. Anyway she got me a EF Sabre from Hobby People. I am not familiar with this heli however it looks a lot like the Walkera. it came with everything all I had to do was put batteries in the transmitter, adjust the flybar paddles and install the training kit.

Anyway here is my problem. I have about 8 or so 4 to 5 minute flights on it so far. I'm flying in my garage with the door shut so no wind or air movement at all. After some practice I'm able to get it off the ground and keep it up for about 30 seconds each try. What happens is the heli starts moving left and right almost like drifitng which I can't seem to stop. I fly fixed wing and my experience has been once I get a plane trimmed I can fly with the hands off the transmitter. But with this heli I seem to be fighting it all the time. I can't seem to get it into a relatively stable hover. I've tried adjusting the trims and triple checkd the flybars for level attitude. Is this trait normal? Is this what makes flying heli's so hard? I have not tried anything fancy, just a hover. am I asking too much for it to be stable? I've seen guys fly helis at RC shows and they can keep them in a perfect hover, of course they were flying different brands of micros, so I wonder is the Sabre a good heli? Any suggestions? I know I'm very new to heli's and I assume there will be a large learning curve. However in watching this heli fly it just seems like it wants to wander quite a bit. Any pointers would be great.

Thanks!

That is very normal for a micro. There is no way you can ever trim it and expect any length of time for a hands-off hover. I think once I hovered my piccolo hands off for maybe 5-6 seconds. Larger helis are more stable, but hovering requires constant, tiny inputs to remain in one place. It may have looked like those expert pilots were not giving any input, but I assure you they were. They just can catch the drift much sooner and make much smaller corrections.

Micro helis are very unstable when they are close to the ground (within ground effect). I dont know how high up you hover, but it may be easier if you take it may be 40-50 cm's over the ground and hover it there.

its very normal..The trick is... practice alot - you will gain a feel for the helicopter, and you need to learn to "predict" the helicopters next movements, and readjust BEFORE the helicopter drifts in that direction.

It sounds hard, but its not. Give it a bit of practice, ignore the thoought of trying to predict it, and with time it will come naturally.

Good point Lorents, I was trying to hover about 2 feet off the ground, trying to minimize damage should I lose control. I will try a little higher to see if the heli is more stable. I have found learning in the garage is working fairly good (for practicing hover only) since the concrete floor is slick concrete, it jusy slides across the ground when I lose it. The rotors have hit a couple times and they just fold away, same with the tail rotor, not a bad design to limit crash damage. Has anyone flown this make of heli before, any input on how to set it up and any mods that make it perform better?

Thanks Lorents for the link, very interesting article. Looks like this heli should be a good one to learn on. The best idea I saw was to change the control rods to the center servo hole to limit the throw as excessive control input seems to be a beginners problem. Your help is greatly appreciated.

If you can't get the hang of it don't be discouraged. A fixed pitch micro isn't exactly the easiest thing to fly for a beginner. At least it looks durable so it won't be too bad when you crash it. Just look at the video, the guy who is flying it has a little trouble with it. He even crashes at the end.

First of all welcome to our addiction. The best little electric heli I have flown so far is the T-rex. And it is very cheap to fix. Good luck and have fun!

Practice! It might be costly but it's the only way we get better!
