Kyosho Caliber-3-5-6-Series F3C-Caliber-90 > Caliber 400 ??>

Dave,

I bought my 3 Calibers from HeliProz as well. And it was HeliProz that I ordered repair parts that took forever to get. I dont blame HeliProz for that, if they cant get parts from Kyosho or whoever the distributor is they cant ship to me. Multiple contacts with HeliProz during this backorder indicated to me that they were having problems getting all sorts of Kyosho parts.

So my experience hasnt been as good as yours. Contrast that with parts being available for my Trex from 2 local hobby shops within a 1/2 hour drive. The same would hold true if I were flying a Raptor 30 rather than the Caliber.

what i dont understand about dealers saying they are having trouble getting kyosho parts rcheliworks never has had a problem and is always in stock
seems to me it is a cop out!
and they are just trying to make excuses for not wanting to try harder to get you what you want
or just choose not to carry items because sales and profits might not be as good

my 2 cents

You just need to have a preferred supplier. One this is results and cost base oriented. That supplier for me is RCHeliworks. I may not be able to drive to a LHS to get it that day, but I can have it within three days which is not bad.

I don't have ANY LHS that I can depend upon unless I want to buy 30 year old stock at list prices...anyone need a set of red/white frequency flags? I rely on internet ordering and UPS/USPS/FedEx for ALL my heli supplies. Never had a parts problem.

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on the advantages (real or imagined) of using a product with widespread support from a multitude of sources versus a product with support from a single source. As long as that single source ALWAYS has exactly what you need that's fine. But it didnt work for me.

If you go back to the earily 90's the Kyosho product was literally the only product that you could get in almost any LHS. Of coarse things have changed but you never know, it may change again too.

Back to the EP400 instead of who can and can't find parts for their Caliber 30s..

I need a little clarification now. Somewhere I've read that the EP400 needs a pinion that is 0.8 mod. Here I read that it needs a pinion that is 0.4 mod. Which is it for certain?

The 0.4 mod is very close to a 64 DP pinion, the 0.8 mod is very close to a 32 DP pinion.

Robinson Racing (www.robinsonracing.com), also available through Tower Hobbies, seems to make both 32 and 64 DP pinions with 1/8th inch bores, from about 16 teeth up to 47 teeth. Are these suitable candidates for motors with 1/8 inch shafts (which also happens to be 3.175 mm, the diameter of the Align 430L 3550 motor).

The Robinson 64 DP pinions with an 1/8th inch bore (very close to 0.8 mod) are available in 9 to 22 tooth versions.

Their 32 DP pinions, with an 1/8th inch bore (very close to 0.4 mod) are available in 16 to 47 teeth versions.

What servos are people using? Are Hitec HS55's acceptable? How about the HS56?

I see that Airtronics and Futaba seem to have some micros available that might be useful, as well.

I see that you're in Tennessee....are you by chance working with Chris at RC Heliworks trying to get the EP 400 going? You seem to be going down the same path he is, servo wise.

Still looking for the correct pinion pitch....

OK, I've put my money where my mouth (or at least fingertips) is. I've taken the plunge and purchased an EP 400. It will be a while until I round up the other bits -- especially the motor and pinion gear.

But --- when it all arrives, I'll do my best to honestly report my thoughts and opinions on this chopper. Maybe by then the nasty weather here in Iowa will repent and warm up in time for some decent test flights later this month.

Dave,

I'm looking forward to your objective analysis on the EP 400 once you have built and flown it. But before that, also interested in how you are going to outfit it... motor(pinion)/battery/ESC/servos/receiver/gyro. And lastly, how it compares to your Trex experience. I've got a Trex XL on the way, but who knows, maybe there is room for the EP400 too...

Thanks,

I'll be picking out some of the goodies today.

I'm thinking the Electron 6 RX, HS 56 servos on the swash, GY401 coupled with either a Futaba 9650 or an Airtronics 761 for the tail.

Motor and pinion are somewhat in the air, but might give a JGF 450TH a shot first. I might also try some of the LiPos that Vinnie at JGF is selling. Don't remember the brand, but the prices seem right and I don't think I've heard anything bad about them. Of course TP 2100 Pro Lites are always a bood fall-back position.

I'll also go with a CC35 ESC since I own two already and have the USB cable for programming.

When you get your XL, be sure to go out of your way to take the swashplate apart, clean off all the glue, then reassemble it using CA. The things simply come apart randomly in the air.

Yeah, yeah, that's first on the list. Know anything about the HS 50? That's whats going to be on the XL tail.

Apologies to all for Trex talk on a Kyosho/Caliber forum...

On my 400 I am using the Futaba 3103's with very good results. Great centering and no play. They seem to be reliable so far.

Some of the C400 user notice that the AON heatsinks interferes with a servo arm/linake.

Simple fix: use a dremel tool and cut off 1 stack of the heat sink (or reduce its height). Others have snipped off the stack by enlarging the gap by 1 layer. This will help keeping the temp down.

Another person asked about heat issue;
In-runners are designed so that the heat stays at the surface of the motor can, where Out-runners heat is in the center of the motor. This is one of the main reason why surface temperature measurement is not a precise science. That is one important factor why so many outrunner require a fan to draw out the hot air.

Steve Chao,
