I agree, 3600kv. The Century motor in your post is 4100kv, maybe too much.

Thank you for your response.
Just to verify, you're talking about the Himax 2015 series 3600, right?
Also, who has good price on this motor? (ship to u.s.)

Hi Murp, with the Himax, put your stock 2mm pinion... with my 3600, I prefer the 10t gear.

So I will need to get a pinion puller I guess. Is it easy to put them on?

Murp, I never use a puller for the stock motor, but I order one for my brushless..

So, after reading this entire thread, it appears that the HiMax 2015-3600 BL motor with the Phoenix 10 ESC and a 8T pinion is the way to go for a good general setup. Is this motor similar to the E-Flite Park 370 (3600kV) motor p/n EFLM1010? I've got one of those sitting around and it needs a home.

Ran home for lunch and found an E-Flite brushless ESC (25A) connected to the Park 370. (Didn't know I had an ESC too!) If memory serves, you can program it to disable the brake and it's got an auto cutoff of 3.0v/cell..

Does that mean as soon as the battery hits 3.0v/cell (9v in my case 'cuz I use 3C LiPos) the motor stops? Right now I fly in idle up until I feel it start to "bog" then land. So far, so good with the LiPos and this method. Unfortunately, I haven't timed a flight so have no idea how long I'd be able to fly until the ESC shuts off the motor.

Guess it won't hurt to try, huh??

I believe it kicks in a governer. So, it won't just suddenly fall out of the sky. But I don't know, I've never reached that point with the ESC, I land when the voltage drops enough that I can tell the response is getting sluggish. The cutoff is nice for assurance, I guess, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't lift the heli off the ground before it reached the low cutoff limit.

Pinion specs...

OK....looking thru this thread it seems like the way to go with a pinion (depending on motor size) would be either 7-10t. But I have one question: looking at eites that sell these pinions, they mention the Pitch ie, 7T 16P or 8T 48P. What is the correct "pitch" for the pinion to go with the stock main-gear? Can someone also explain to me the 'pitch' of the pinion? The thing is so darn small.....?

Thank you
Bert

Hi Martin_gsxr,

Sorry for my stupid question ...but what is 0.5M ? the most sites specify a Pitch number: 16, 32, even 64. How does the 0.5M relate to the pitch? Sorry but now I'm confused.

Hi Bert, the pitch number is 48... how to get that number, I will check and get back to you ...

Hi Bert, 48 is near but not perfect.. here is a post by CUDABOY:

i'd measure if i was near a heli. but, 'module' and 'pitch' are not some arbitrary values assigned by a standards board. you can actually measure them for yourself.

z = number of teeth in gear
Mn = normal module
PD = pitch diameter of gear (diameter in mm of the gear if the teeth were all stripped off)
OD = outside diameter of gear (diameter in mm including the teeth)

Formula

Normal Module:
Mn= PD/z

If you measure the PD to be 70mm and there are 140teeth, then the gear has a module of 70/140=.5

similarly, pitch is the 'english' measurement system. pitch is defined as the number of teeth a 1" wheel would have. so, 48P is a 1" diameter* gear with 48 teeth.

so, 48P is roughly (25.4mm*Pi)/48=1.66 module** (25.4mm = 1 inch)

*pitch is vastly more complex to calculate because it is calculated off of the "pitch circle" rather than the inner or outer diameter as 'module' measurement does. i won't go into the gory details of pitch circle---but, it involves a lot of trig...suffice to say, if you do calculate the pitch circle, you can find the pitch by dividing the pitch circle circumference by the number of teeth....or (D*Pi)/Teeth (where D is the pitch circle diameter of the gear)

**in the example above, the module would actually be less than 1.66 as the pitch circle would be slightly larger than the 1" since the module calculation uses the ID of the gear.

AAAAAHHHHHHH -

Thank you Martin_gsxr, now I (almost) understand the difference/simularity between Module and Pitch...

Thanks

Excellent info Martin_gsxr! I always wondered how pitch was determined
(Thanks to CUDABOY for the original info too!)

Question regarding pinions.. Some of the larger scale slot cars and locomotives use 300 sized motors and the pinions sure look to be the same size/pitch as the ones we use for our Blades.. Anyone ever try the local slot car club for a source of pinions?
