Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > Gyro and parts upgrade for Rap .30/.50 ?

Due to some providential financial transactions this month, I am going to build a second Raptor. It will eventually be a .50, but will start life as a .30, as I already have the extra engine, Weston pipe, etc. (Unless someone knows where I can get a screaming deal on a .50 kit with motor and pipe!)

A couple of questions...

I use a Futaba GY 240 on Rap #1, and really like it. No muss, no fuss, hooked it up and flew it. I like the positive comments on the GY 401/9253 combo. Is this gyro going to be the best bargain around for a while? Or is there a 402 in the works? I can't see getting much more high-tech, like a 502 etc for now. Your recommendations appreciated.

As for upgrades to the Raptor... I have flown mine basically stock, and it is fine. No problems with clutch, tail hub hasn't exploded, etc. Anything I may want to put on #2, that is a REAL improvement, and not just eye-candy? I do have a Weston pipe for the new one if it gets a .36, so had planned on a frame brace, probably the NHP with cooling shroud extension. When this thing grows up into a .50, I am a little more concerned about the rotor head and blade situation. Is there a metal rotor head and main blade grip available for the .30? I believe a metal swash and washout with a metal head and grips would be pretty tight. Or am I just gilding the lily?

Thanks, guys and gals,

Tim

upgrading...

Hammertime,

I had the same thoughts as you regarding the rotorhead and other areas after commiting to the 46/50 conversion.

I never was happy with the stock head/grips. I always had some slop in mine. The main problem was the blade grips, not so much the rotorhead or "hub".

After I ordered my conversion I bought a new set of stock blade grips thinking they would be a little tighter. I had lateral and radial play in the stock head from day one. The new grips were no better.... I was bummed.

I decided to take a chance on the metal blade grips that Cyberheli sold and I can tell your first hand they tightened the head up completely. No more slop and they look awesome. You get only the grip set for 50 bucks, you must re-use your bearings.

You might consider the metal washout base as well, it is a little tighter than the stock plastic one and you may consider the Raptor 60 tail upgrade for the 50. Also, the new factory Raptor 50 comes with a larger fuel tank. The conversion kit does not include this item and you may want to buy one if you go with a 50. Otherwise prepare yourself for 8 minute flights.

I have the metal swashplate upgrade as well, it is a little tighter, not simply eye candy.... but it isn't the last word in swashplates either, but is better than stock.

Put it this way, it's your heli... If you want to upgrade it and can afford it, go for it!

No one says anything when someone gets a new stereo upgrade for their house or car, or a CPU upgrade for their computer...

Seems to me, many people in the forums like to rip people up for adding alot of upgrades to their heli.

It's your heli and your money. If you want to see my 46 upgrades look at my gallery. or go to my website.

BTW_ I don't think the 401 is anywhere close to being obsolete. Get one if you can even find one these days. The 9253 combo is the way to go...

I can tell you that the TT metal swash plate is no tighter than the stock plastic one as it uses the same bearing. I hear that the Quick UK (not Quick WW) swash is a good upgrade.
