but was curious how anni felt about his motor/pinion/cell count combo personally.

The motor has quite alot of torque and the climbouts are good. Im pretty confident i will flip it and roll it and do some light 3D with it tomorrow but we will see. Im sure it will be much better on 6S but time will tell. Pinions are on the way so its just a matter of waiting on the postman

Yeah the main gear is 120T btw and they also make a 88T slow down main gear which might be great for something. not sure what tho

My interest is peaked now- This looks like a NIIICE heli...

ten minutes playing around in KC's yields the following:

Wiring Resistance = 6mohm
Main Gear = 120T
GearStage = 1
Gear Loss = 3
Heli Weight = 33oz (based on AnnihilaT's AUW and config)
rotor dia. = 900mm

max headspeed of 2500 (based on 10T 9S1P config)

Keep in mind this stuff is relative and may not reflect reality

The 9S1P setup will look better if I had the Align 1500 specs (weight, resistance)

Motor, pinion, weight - battery type/config - RPM - AUW - Watts/lb - bog

Known good setups

Mega 16/25/4 9T 115g - 6S1P TP-PL-2100 - 2101RPM (max) - 1371g AUW - 374W/lb @1800RPM

Mega 16/25/6 10T 115g - 9S1P Magnum/Apex1800 - 2467RPM (max) - 1447g AUW - 473W/lb @1800RPM

i was just about seriously leaning towards the mega 25/4 motor with the 6s1p but looking at your numbers it won't be all that hot compared to some of the other figures you've put together....... (thanks for those BTW

do they make a pinion that small for this motor? or is that motor a smaller shaft 2.xx whatever it is? will that small a shaft not break under such serious load and watt power? also, think the TP2100's are going to hold up under that kind of power request from the motor?

cool Anni.. I just got one too.. using 2 - TP2100 3s1p and 1 - TP2100 2s1p. this thing is ridiculously stable and flies like my raptor 50 with the same punch.

i'm gonna shoot a 3d video of it this wknd.

woops, this is a TRex board.. oh well. Most of the guys I know flying them came from TRexes anyways.. hehe

heheh WRXR, I'm getting good at KC's spreadsheet- fun stuff!

The QJ EP-8 must use a different gear modulus cause the website lists 3.17mm pinions down to 8T- So yeah they should be available-

Amp draw at 200W/lb is slightly less than the Mega (30.9A vs. 31.2A) so if the 6S1P 15C TP-PL 2100 packs can handle the Mega, they can handle the Medusa...

30A is just about where you want to be running those 15C 2100 packs anyway...

Motor losses are higher at 14.7W/oz (vs. 12.2W/oz) ,partly because of the lower mass so get a GOOD heatsink like the AON one to put it on there-

so the medusa just looks like hands down a better option as its getting the same batts, but more power/weight ratio than the Mega 4....

I'm in the same boat- I REALLY want a new heli toy to play with, but anything bigger than a hornet or an XRB just isn't going to get flown till April...

Plus I'm shooting for an E-Raptor50 for next spring anyway... I've got a SWEET CHEAP setup in mind, but I can't tell you, it's super-mega-secret...

I honestly think that Align will have something in the 900mm class before the spring, I'm just gonna suck it up and wait. If I don't I won't be able to afford the Raptor...

In the mean time, if you need a motor recommendation, let me know-

course... 3 months ago we were all saying that about a 3000rpm Trex... (and i'm flying one daily-- least until it snowed today

) at that headspeed.

WRXR, I didn't pull 2500 out of my - - - errr hat, that's the max RPM off the 9S1P config posted on ep-8.com

Mega 16/25/6 10T 115g - 9S1P Magnum/Apex1800 - 2467RPM (max) - 1447g AUW - 473W/lb @1800RPM

It's very possible that the actual headspeed is lower than that- any one have a manual of some other indication of what the max headspeed should be?

If the max headspeed is lower, say around 2100-2300, than there may be a better motor combo that cranks right in that range. The Medusa Research 28-056-1400 9T 160g - 6S1P TP-PL-2100 - 2312RPM (max) - 1492g AUW - 465W/lb @1800RPM - 5.8% bog combo might be optimal then....

I got my buddies StrangeRanger and Sal psyched about the EP-8 as well, I know Sal is gonna order one as soon as he gets ahold of the distributor. I should have an EP-8 to build and test drive (with a Medusa motor, natch) in a few weeks.

Gonna try that Airtronics digi servo on the tail too- looks like the best option now that the 9650s are back ordered till the end of the year... and they're lighter

Flytech! Great video! And long time no see. I love your landing gear! That looks so much better i think than the metal ones on it now. Could you please tell me where you got them and take some pics for me of how you mounted them? Ive GOT to have them.

Are those K7S 30 size 3D paddles? Did it improve cyclic alot to put those on there?

Also can you clarify your power setup. Its sounded to me like you said you are running 2 tp2100's and then a 2 cell wired in there as well. What exactly are you doing there?

I just got mine last week so havent gotten to fly it at the field yet but plan on doing that today.

TheDude, I think its a good indication of how nice this heli is that all us "old trex guys" are raving about this machine. I wish you guys luck with it. I know you gonna love it.

One comment about the headspeed.... you guys need to keep in mind until we hear otherwise that there have been reports on one website of damaging the head when running it up over 2000rpm. Another site i read said they are running around 2250 rpm with no incident yet. Im personally running 2050 rpm right now but when i go to 6S im going to try and up it to 2200 and see how everything sounds when i do that. The larger the heli the less headspeed you need tho generally speaking so from what i can tell already just from the little flying i have done with this thing - its not gonna need the same amount of headpeed we are flying on our trex's to perform well.

Im gonna start packing things up.... Cant wait to fly this thing today

that heli looks great exept the canopy.....they could have done better.thats where the stingers come inn(when it hits the market)
now that Align has something up there sleeve i think im gonna wait and SEEEEE.........

i did a test run on the wife last night....

uh oh--- didn't fare so well.

anyways... i saw on the sportsman i think it said don't go over 1800 w/out modding the head to handle it. but since the Expert 3D version is so new... its probably more capable in the headspeed dept... one thing i noticed on the EP8 site was that the tail on the sportsman will give you trouble if you attempt to go over 1800 headspeed... but that the new 3D tail had a CNC upgrade and could be pushed harder.

still 2500 seems crazy if 2000 is the target point. i think what Anni's saying makes good sense.... this is not your 'fathers align t-rex'. crazy headspeeds are not necessary.

but i wouldn't be surprised to see some peops get away with near 2500 on the 3D version--- just be carefull if you're gonna do that.

and in terms of power system... probably a good idea if you're going to try it at 2500, to make sure your power system can shrink down a pinion or two in order to bring the head down if necessary.

Dude--- that's why i thought 8t pinion making 2400+ on paper is too HOT... leaves you no room to move in terms of pinion if need be. (although maybe the smaller main would be an option)...

ah well.... too new and too much $$$ for me innovate at this point.

i will probably hold off for now. see what gets tested and becomes 'tried and true' combo.

will that airtronics servo fit the mounts on this bird, or does it require mounting up direct to the boom?

paddles: the R50's greenies increase the roll-rate quite a bit. You will see it's capabilities once I shoot the vid this wknd.

headspeed: Don't go much over 2K HS. I've seen the main shaft fail at this velocity and it's not pretty. Also, are you sure you're running 3s2p? Sure it's not 6s1p?

power: I'm on a 16/25/4 w/8s1p using CC HV45 (don't judge by video, it flew about 1/2 of it's real power in that clip.

canopy: I emailed www.ep-8.com on it. Options will be available soon (after-market as well)

frames: there are after-market frames available already. it's seen in the blue - anodized one in my gallery. i believe Charlie makes them out of g-10

head: did anyone notice the rotor's design is just like Miniature Aircraft's Fury Extreme? cool!

there's already 3 ep-8s at my field and 1 or 2 more at another. these things are starting to pop-up everywhere!

Well.... Had it out today for a few flights. I didnt flip it. Didnt have the balls. It was very cold today and my lipos didnt seem to have the energy they normally would have and with it being new and me not having the confidence i should have had i just decided against trying it until i see a bit more power out of it. Im sure it would have been fine but i overthought it and then spooked myself. So instead i took the Viper 70 inverted for the first time today. That was fun but i think it needs some more power as well. The trex on the other hand got thrown all over the sky in all orientations. Its been awhile since ive been to the field so i took advantage of having the time and space for some real flying again and luckily brought everything home in one piece. Flew 7 packs and called it a day when it started raining.

Anyway back to the EP8. Its still a dream to fly. Another factor that contributed to me not wanting to flip it over was that the thing is SO DAMN stable. Almost too stable. I have dual rates at 140 maxed and expo is maxed negative to soften up the hovering area of the cyclic range and swash afr is also maxed (with no binding). After all of this its still so damn stable. So ive decided to wait till i get some 3D paddles on it and my 10T pinion so i can go 6S1P (Flytech, yes im sure im flying it 3S2P right now - i had to solder up 2 Y cables to hook my TP 2100's in parallel and if i was flying 6S1P my 20T pinion would have made the head fly apart already). I have K&S .30 siz 3D paddles on the way and if i dont like them im gonna try the raptor paddles you guys are using (although, damn! they be uuuuhgly!)

Im more about how it flies than how it looks tho

Im convinced this is gonna be a really fun machine. The nice thing is that you only have the power system to play with. Nothing else needs tweaked. It just flies great out of the box and the blades tracked perfectly on the first spool up with no adjustments needed. Ok the paddles you will want to change for hard 3D i guess but thats about the cheapest thing you can buy for a heli innit?
