My new Machine! (Quick Japan EP-8 / QJ8)

I just bought a Quick Jpan EP-8 (NOT HHI - NOT Quick Worldwide)

Its been maidened today and all i can say is wow! Finally a heli that blows me away in a way that i wasnt expecting at all. This thing was a dream to put together and it just works! Like it should! Out of the box! With no hassle! Im actually a bit speechless at the moment but this is now my favorite heli... Im just so impressed with how it flies at the moment. Havent done anything special with it yet other than some light forward flight, some climbouts and lots of hovering but so far its just a dream to fly. A couple things i wanna try to improve cyclic response but there is really nothing left to do with this machine but fly it and get some 10-11T pinions so i can go try 6S1P instead of 3S2P. Also gonna try the tip to put k&s 3d .30 size paddles on it for the cyclic. Im at 2050 RPM at no load and the hacker A30-10L seems to have alot of torque. For sure this machine blows my Viper 70 out of the water on all levels i can think of. Can anyone tell im happy with this thing? haha

here is my setup:

400mm Quick CF blades
3 x hs-81
1 x Volz Speed Max XP Digital on tail
CSM 420 rev 3 gyro
Futaba 146iP pcm receiver (gonna swap this for a 149DP 9 chan later for more range)
Hacker A30-10L with 20T pinion
2 X TP2100 3S1P wired in parallel to make a 4200mah 3S2P pack
Stock tail blades

Think thats about it. My headspeed is 2050 unloaded and at 0 pitch. I got +12 / -12 pitch setup in idle 2 and get no bogging on climbouts so far that i can notice. 12 minute flights is where i stop at but i could get more i think. After 12 minutes packs are at around 109F and the motor is at 120F.

i took some pics. You can find them here:

http://www.annihilat.net/cgi-bin/al...pter-Vids/quick;photo_height=500

One comment. The HS-81 servo arms werent quite long enough to get perfect geometry on the ail. and pitch servos so im rolling this one around in my head how i will fix this in the long term. One idea was to get blue alu hitec upgrade arms which would be longer but then the geometry on the front elevator servo would be off. It seems to work fine like this and required no special mixing to ensure the swashplate remains level in all positions so maybe i will just keep it like this. Any suggestions?

Also i included an XL Trex in a few pics to show size comparison.

Cheers,
Anni

Anni...

cut this out man...

(know you're still ticked at me about the whole PM thing, but lets not let a little PM issue get in the way of fun helis )

i've just gone and read up a bit on this bird, now you've got me wanting one BADLY!

seems like just the right size increase over the trexy, (not too much bigger), you get all the metal bling right off the bat, and it flies great out of the box.

Now I want one bad! X-MAS is coming

Hey guys,

I havent done much more than hovering, climbouts, and some slow flying around in a small space due to weather but already the way it responds tells me that its gonna be a real joy when i get it out to the field. Weather looks good for thursday so thats when i will get some real flights in on it. So no reports on flips and inverted yet.

The price was about 280 Euro's for the kit which was all metal. The only thing plastic on it are the ball links and the tail pushrod guides and the tail blades. It also included a set of 400mm CF blades (rotor diameter is 890mm total). The flybar is 3mm diam. so it will take 30 sized 3D paddles which i have ordered and are supposed to increase flip/roll rate alot. Spares are available from 1 place in europe that im aware of so far and there are like 3 places in the states that stock them. The prices are about the same or even a bit less than TREX spares actually. Very affordable.

The pictures dont really do it justice is showing its size. Trust me this thing is alot bigger than it looks compared to the Trex in those pics. Its also handles nothing like a trex. Its very smooth and predictable like how a much larger nitro bird flies. Im really in love with this thing at the moment

Best thing is you can use your TREX packs in it. right now im running 2 TP2100 in parallel for a 4200mah 3s2p pack (give me about 12 mins) but when i get a 10T pinion i will be wiring them in series for a
6s1p configuration.

AUW with 2 TP2100's is 1368 grams.

did you go with JAZZ or CC45?

i was reading on the ep8 website that one of the big MEGAs and a CC45 are the way to go for a 6s fairly ballistic flyer...... course i'm sure there are numerous other setups that could be awesome as well....

i WANT ONE!!!!

Quick EP-8

EP-8s are very popular in Japan. I started to purchase one during my stay there but I was told that the parts are hard to come by in the US. The cost was only about $160.00. Well, maybe next time.

Aim High!

There seems to be 2 versions of this heli from www.helicopterhobbies.com. . .a sportsman and an expert version. Which version did you get? I'm assuming from the blue anodizing that it's the expert version. They're offering a combo package with a Hacker A30-10L and Hacker Quark ESC for $455 for the Sportsman version, but if there is a big difference in the Sportsman and the Expert, I may wait for the Expert version which they expect to get in about a month.

Yup. Another satisfied QJ8 owner. I have one as well and am getting ready to purchase another one. Parts are readily available in the states from helicopterhobbies.com. The proprietor, Harold Little is a super nice guy and knows what customer service is all about! I simply cannot say enough about him and the Quick of Japan products.

By the way, do not confuse Quick of Japan with the alledged Quick people in Pennsylvania (HHI). There is no comparison or similarity!

See build pictures in my gallery. More of the finnished bird to follow.

I have flown this beauty 7 times now and am also blown away...

Also, QJ8 is the new nomencature for what used to be called the EP8, here in the states that is...

Anyone know what the main difference is between the sportsman and expert versions? I know that the expert has a larger main shaft and the blue anodizing, but not sure it that justifies the extra cost.

They are all the same thing. They are made by Quick of Japan. There is also a Quick Heli company from Pennsylvania and Quick UK. Quick UK doesn't make heli's to the best of my knowledge and Quick Heli from PA get's their heli's from Quick WorldWide. . .a Chinese company. QWW and QJ used to be the same company from my understanding, but they have since split. The QJ EP8 has now been renamed to QJ8 to avoid further confusion and is usually the heli that people are referring to in these posts.
