In my continuing saga of trying to get a used Freya up and running
('it only has a few gallons through it' famous last words), I finally
got it put back together after shipping the engine off to have its
piston/liner replaced. Guess what, the main gear now freewheels
in both directions. After popping out the oneway, I found one crack
almost completely full length and 4 other cracks (the exterior metal shell
of the bearing is
octagonal in shape) in various stages of formation. The plastic
carrier was not cracked.

I luckily had an extra oneway and I discovered it during the preflight but just another 'keep an eye on it'
warning from one Freya owner to the others. Funny that my other
machine w/ alot more time on it doesn't have any problem.

Mine failed too... but that was after a rebuild, so it was probably damaged in the previous crash. Ever since, it's been a-ok. I don't think the EX upgrade is called for since I only broke it once in about 100 flights.

What you do want to look out for when checking a used Freya is the following aside from the obvious.

bent tail shaft - Without the main blades, remove the tail blade holder (w/ tail blades) and spin the rotor head, the tail shaft should not be wobbling.

bent tail blade holder - Holding the entire tail blade holder (w/ tail blade grips and blades), slowly rotate the holder and see if the tail blade grips are wobbling.

skewed center hub - Spin the rotorhead (w/o blades) and see if the built-in stop button is not wobbling to one side

bent spindle - put a allen driver on the bolt on one end of the spindle and rotate slowly, if either of the blade grips wobbles, it needs to be replaced.

belt teeth - slowly rotate the head while peeking at the belt, check for broken teeth.

Nothing seriously wrong w/ it but my 'good deal' has cost me
a new piston/liner (previous one was seriously scored) and this
in addition to some small stuff like a few bearings, changing out a
few thing to the way I like them (different screws, shims, t/r control rod) and a set of Tuff Struts in addition to essentially a full teardown and re-build. It'll be fine, just another one of those live and
learn things.

But aren't they worth it?

I got mine used also got a great deal with no problems. Only damage was the stuff I did.
Only complaint is that tail blade holder. I think you could bend that thing with your hand.
Oh well paid 800 for it with all elecs including a 401/9253 (no rx)
Now if I could just get time to fly it.
So far I haven't had problems with the one way, but I do keep an eye on it and the next teardown it will be replaced just to be on the safe side.

Howard,

What happened to you is why I never buy used r/c stuff- especially helo goodies.

Used helo

I recently bought a used GPH from eBay. Big chance, low price, overall lucky I guess. I have to replace a few parts, nothing expensive. It flew fine, just had a very slight vibration that we couldn't figure out. It had less vibration than many others, but I wanted to nail it down.

The featuring spindle was a tad out of round, I mean so little most people would fly it. I also found 1 blade grip bearing needed replacing and the problems were solved.

I finally found this when I decided to get a better set of blades than what was on it.

Now if I can only keep a 1 gyro in it! I started off with a GY 401, it went bad. Put a GY601 that was set aside for my Freya, and just pulled that out for the GY 502 that was sent to me because Futaba couldn't fix/replace my GY 401.

Howard,

Check the one-way holder(black plastic piece) and see if you can see light through any of the flat parts wehre the pointed part of the bearing rests... Some of the black plastic hubs are a little off on the molding, this is what causes the bearings to fail.

I did some experimenting with these things, I thought it was lateral stresses after a crash. I disproved that theory by breaking a one way that had not been in a crash.

As far as purchasing things from fellow heli type people, I have had nothing but good luck.

If you wanted to make the one way bearing and hub bullet proof, what upgrades/part numbers would you need? Thanks
