I used to fly my plane, as a relaxing break from heli flying, until I stuffed it into the ground practising inverted circuits

Open your eyes and minds!!

One should consider the proverb "You CAN'T judge a book by the cover." as it has some truth to it.

I have seen heli pilots trying out docile trainer few laps and say "Hey this is too easy".
I have also seen plane pilots try blade cx and say "Hey this is too easy."

Don't you think it is same as proverb and/or someone who never tasted peach and lick the skin and say "It is no good."

I can say that I have tasted the fruit called plank.. eh plane. I am in the process of tasting the heli fruit (3 months).

I've managed to learn fig 8, backward fig 8, inv fig 8, inv backward fig 8, snake fig 8, funnel, inv funnel, snake funnel fig 8, piro circle, inv piro circle, piro snake fig 8, and just started to attempt piro flips.

I currently fly 3d capable planes and helis. What I like to add is that heli guys should not compare raptor 90se class machine cost to foamy airplanes costs and plane guys compare their 35-40% 3d plane costs to a blade cx cost.

I can also add that heli pilot trying to fly a plane the first time would be many many folds easire than a complete newbie trying it out the first time and of course same goes true for helis.

Bottom Line!!! Enjoy both if your time and budget allow as they both are incredibly fun if you get to know them.

Here is a video of my plank. Planks are not for flying high and far away and doing circles as someone stated.

I enjoy both, but it is a big issue with long time die hard plank fliers in northern Nevada. Some plank fliers, not all, just dont like helis. I for the life of me just cant understand it. Are they afraid of being hit by one? Is it the noise? The hovering over the runway? Are they just grumpy old men who are too tired to learn how to build and fly like the younger guys, and are intimidated?
Most likely, its all of the above. I personally used to fly planks but cant afford both, and dont need a runway to fly a heli,so I only fly one heli now. I feel sorry for the few guys out there that feel the way they do about helis because they just dont know what there missing!!!

The weirdest thing about this endless debate is that it only exists in the model world. I have been a full scale pilot since I hit puberty, and have never heard anything similar. Generally pilots are people who love to fly. We may envy the machines that others are fortunate enough to operate, but I have never heard a Sikorsky pilot say that a Gulfstream pilot sucked because his bird was a plank! R/C pilots do something that only a small percentage of the population can appreciate, so to have a divide within this tiny community is really silly. As with most fueds, the solution is almost certainly communication with those who dont understand us. As the minority, I feel that it is incumbent upon us to rise up and show our fixed wing counterparts that we are more alike than different; and perhaps even share with them the majesty of breaking the surley bonds of gravity with a helicopter.

I like 'em both!

I have been flying R/C airplanes for about 2-1/2 years now. I LOVE them! The heli pilot at the field have been wonderful to me, and they will chat with anyone, but, yes, there was a little bit of segregation going on. The thing is, though, I always loved to watch the helicopters fly--they fascinated me and I asked a lot of questions. A few of the heli folks kept telling me I could fly a heli if I wanted to, but I felt I didn't have the hand-eye coordination for it.

At any rate, we lost our field in August and moved to a new club. This is a smaller club & larger field, and the people are more laid-back than at the other one. I gained confidence with my planes and started trying some new tricks. I discovered that over the past few years, my hand-eye coordination has improved. At 40 years old, this is GOOD NEWS! All this led to additional helicuriosity.

Our new field has a separate area for hovering helicopters, but they are welcome to do forward flight and 3D in either area. This way, hovering doesn't interfere with airplanes taking off or landing, and vice versa. Helicopters and airplanes have flown together in the same airspace more than once at this field. The trick is communication and awareness of where each other's aircraft are.

I am probably an Intermediate airplane pilot, but I am a raw Beginner with the helicopters. I enjoy them both very thoroughly, but in very different ways. We have many airplanes (including our trainers, a couple Bipes, some Stiks, etc...) and 2 helicopters (a Blade CX and my Trex 450 SE). I also have a Savage R/C truck and hubby has a Revo.

MY short answer to your question, Helis Vs Planes? BOTH!

Michelle

Where I fly the plane guys get along very well with us heli guys. There are a couple of reasons for this, one we all get along and are courteous to each other, second we'll usually fly three heli's at a time so instead of waiting 45mins for a chance to fly they only have to wait 15mins. But the best part is the club president/field owner fly's helis .

Love my life, love my wife but my heli is my mistress! :D

The animal homo sapiens erectus is suspicious of strangers, guards his territory with aggression. This behavior is blamed on the "lizard cortex" at the base of our skulls..

So it is no surprise that some of us get into this "this is bad, that is bad" crap.

I do believe that any flying site welcoming both fixed- and heli-wingers needs ideally to provide a separate area for them individually.

The flying styles tend to be different, right? So separate them..

Is one superior to the other? Horse hockey.

They are different - so what?

My IMAC cost $6500. My pattern model cost $3500. My 90-sized heli cost $2500. So what? I could spend $5000 on a competition heli if I could still fly competition in my senior years

It is gross ignorance in my opinion to think ill of someone who flies helis, or who flies fixed-wingers. This is too much "lizard cortex," which one would hope our specie would be able to overcome thanks to our big brain.

Turbine Jets?

Heres a can o worms for ya, Do you think helis are harder to fly than these new turbine jets alot of people are flying now? Retractable landing gear and flaps all at VERY high speed???

trsewelldad - No, it's all relative and depends what you are trying to do. Jets don't necessarily travel at high speeds and are as easy or difficult to fly as helis. The retracts and flaps are not used at high speed as they're all part of the slow flight stuff. At my field, a mate has a couple of Boomerangs which are very easy to fly and don't travel that quick, BUT wow what a specticle - the sound . There's another chap who flys a small IC powered plane which has been clocked at 240MPH and he's doing this about a foot off the ground. I've seen him fly that into the cloud base and I couldn't really see it before it got there - he has astonishing eyesight. I've also seen him crash it

Love em both! Although I went back to planes just to relax...and cars now if I want to be competitive. Someday Id like to get back into helis, but I love the fact that If I trash my plane, I can just buy an ARF and through the rest in less than 2-3 hours! No more complete rebuilds like my heli in a bad crash!!
