jfenton ,

If you flew over the pits what did you expect ? If someone puts my life in danger , the least that they can expect is a mouthful of abuse .

What I expect is that people handle themselves like adults, and promte the cause the claim to be interesdted in. I.E., if safety is your concern then dont bother me when I am flying. By the way, the club rules state that INTENTIONAL flying over the pits is violation of the rules, as is distracting a pilot who is flying. Therefore as my being over the pits was an accident, he violated the rules, and I did not.

INTENTIONAL flying over the pits is violation of the rules,

Every body makes mistakes , but making a mistake shouldn't result in your model arriving over the pits . You should be flying far enough away from the pits so that it simply doesn't happen . As you have stated that you had been flying 3D and lots of inverted which leads me to beleive that you are a competent pilot , yet beleiving flying over the pits is OK if it's a mistake smacks of a completely maverick attitude . Safe flying is no accident .

The only thing I would disagree with that is when there is a problem with a heli, if for example the gyro throws a fit, or a servo starts to go bad in the air, the heli could turn towards the pits, and even if you started out "far enough away" (judgement call) they can move pretty quick and close that distance, and you may struggle with getting it back down safely.

I know this because this is exactly what happened to me, my tail servo kicked out while in the first 1/8th-1/4 of a roll, the heli changed course by about 45 degrees bringing it right at the pits, luckily I managed to avoid hitting anything and got it on the deck without further incident, after that the tail servo just wanted to go hard over to one side, this was unintentional, and wasnt a mistake, it was a failure.

Its good to have a safe attitude but that doesnt prevent mechanical or electronic failure which can just as easily cause the same thing as doing something dumb with a healthy heli.

I think if the scenario repeated itself again I would have kept it on the other side of the the flight line. (Because I learned from this experience), as far as the 'maveric attitude' is concerened, I fly airplanes for a living as do most of the people I care about, and I have buried several, so I do not take safety lightly.

On the maverick attitude thing, I am also a full scale pilot of both heli's and airplanes. Im quite young and have buried friends myself. I infact watched in horror as a 4,000 hour pilot who flew things like mooneys and Jets in the airforce spin his motorglider in from about two hundred feet. It was his first time flying it in years. I subsequently visited him in the hospitial over the weeks after the accident. I met him again after being deployed for a year. He's barely walking but he's doing his best to fly again. I guess he was too close for missles and didnt have time to switch to guns during his accident. I think 4,000 hours is a competent pilot dont you? He made a mistake that was literally 5 feet from costing him his life. Everyone makes mistakes, weither old, young, bold, careful, or stupid.

Getting it down safely , doesn't mean undamaged . If you're flying at an appropriate distance and something goes wrong , you have time to ditch the machine before it gets near the pits .

Well in that incident the heli was about 75 feet from the pits, passing from the right to the left, it closed that 75 feet in little over a second, there wasnt much oportunity to ditch it, it had already gotten to the pits before there was time to react.

Flying intentionally over the pits is something that really annoys me (PM inbound about this) but failures that cause it before you can react, thats totally different.

OK Hover a plane....... I could hover a heli on the sim the second time I tried and thats because I didnt know what every thing did,not as good as now but I hovered for a good min. Ya fllying a plane is easy to start but try hovering, inverted flat spins, knife edge spins, and add the fact of the plane being $2,000(50cc). I think u get the point(At leased I hope you do)

I think airplanes and helis are fun and thrilling to fly but when it comes to me taking the time to get a plane ready from the ARF stage, I just dont have the drive to do it.

I have a 40 size aerobatic trainer at home thats been there for 12 years I bet. Never flown it... All it needs is the push rods installed and electronics setup.

When I seen the Blade CX, RC tickled my interest again. Helis just do it for me. They got me back into RC

Helis vs Planes

I fly both and have more friends than just flying either one!
You earn respect from both worlds if you can gracefully fly both models.
