I will let Ken (Furious Raptor) answer all your questions here as he has all the information and can answer your questions appropriately. I can tell you that it's an FAI record that is currently held in Russia. I'm sure Ken (Furious Raptor) will chime in shortly.

The Un-Official results!

Thanks Todd,

And thanks to everyone else who helped to make this day a reality.

The current record is 97.77 km/hr

http://records.fai.org/models/history.asp?id=8717

Today my heli averaged a speed of 121.2 km/hr.

That averages out to an approximate speed of 75 mph.

In practice, the heli has been over 162 km/hr (101 mph), but today with the gusting winds, 121 km/hr (75 mph) was about it.

If someone comes in and officially breaks my record, there is still some more left on the table!!

Anyhow, thanks again to everyone who helped and when the record becomes official, I will let you know.

Congratulations. I'm sure you put a lot of hard work into this record. Not only the actual flying, but the practicing, and the logistics of getting all your ducks in a row to record it properly, document it, and make it stand.

And you still have your heli in one piece. (Many of us out here have probably had ours go that fast too, right before they hit the ground)!

Tony, your ion wont "beat it" if its over 5kg auw 42V and the many other conditions that FAI has for an official record

all record attempts have to be witnessed, signed off and so much other stuff that it really is an achievement to get an officially recognized record.

Way to go Ken!! you still working with gp max speed runs?

11 lbs for the heli is not bad but how is that 42 volts measured ? Is that 35 cells NiCd or 11-2/3 cells LiPo ?

XeroG 600 EP

There are a few of reasons why the heli is ssoooooo fast;

1) The latest technology in motors and batteries really helps

2) The HV series of speed controls from Castel Creations really work well.

3) The factor that affects the performance of the heli the most, is without a doubt, the XeroG 600 EP chassis.

The chassis is so much lighter, and the geometry is absolutely correct to allow the heli to do a lot of things a stock heli just plain won't do.

I have 3 Electric Raptors;

1 set up as the original conversion running on 2 3S4P's
1 set up in the "high mount" box conversion on 10S 2P's
And the rocket heli, the XeroG running on 10S2P's or 10S3P's

No comparison, the XeroG out performs the others easily.

Right now I an anixously waiting for the XeroG Gas conversion for next season.

Word has it that the new glow version will be as good as the electric!

IF you want to go fast and quick with an Electric,

XeroG 600 EP
Castle Creations HV-85 or 110 Speed control
Thunder Power batteries
Neu motors.

Just FYI, I did get most of my heli from Real Raptors (UK). They treated me very well and before IRCHA, they didn't know me from adam.

The only problem I personally have with others using this setup is that I may have to actually race against them some time!!!!

Ken, thanks for that.
My XeroG50 has been my favorite heli all year and do 80% of my flying on it. I find i'm always making tweeks to it one way or the other. It's a fabulous machine and just gets better and better.
I am planning on getting the whole 600e package from RealRaptors early next year just as soon as I can sell my Cobra to fund it. I think I'll also be getting the 14MZ as recently I have become all to aware of the swash interaction problems from my 9C.
From what I hear, there may well be lower cost batteries out next year as the major hand tools manufacturers are doing some aggressive marketing with Lipos. This is great news as it will allow me to continue back to back flying without breaking the bank.

9C

I actually need to build a second 600 EP ship for 3D work, the all out speed machine has fins and cowlings that really kill any 3D.

As far as the swash interation, what are you seeing?

Before the full fuselage dress on my XeroG, I did a lot of 3D and didn't seem to notice any interaction.

There is of course the possibility that I might not know it if I had it, but the machine behaves better than my stock glow R-50 in manuevers.

I do recall having to play with the linearity of the pitch curve around the center of travel (0° pitch) to make it fly the way I liked.

I am using the standard 9252 Futaba digital servos on the ccpm and carrying a separate on board battery pack, 4.8 volt nicads.

hmmm

I do agree with you, hopefully the pricing and weight will come down on batteries next year to allow more people to get into the electric side of heli flight.

Next year in this area we are going to start "Barrell Racing" kinda like they did in Vegas. That looked like the next best thing between drag racing and pylon racing!!

The Xero is made for that kind of event.

Can't wait!!!

Thanks,

Ken

Ken, yeap, I have 9252's as well, driving all QuickUK stuff.
I noticed that my lefthand servo seemed to always lead the righthand servo, doesn't matter which direction. The right hand was always late.
In another thread, Jkos has done a whole load of experiments concerning latency on various transmitters/receivers. His answer to my problem was that the 9C has the worst latency out of the lot. The latency is between higher and lower channels. This means that as you increase (or decrease) the collective, each of then 3 servos don't move at precisely the same time although after the change in pitch, they do all come to rest correctly. I proved this myself using a lazer mounted on the swash, and indeed once the beam has travelled 12 foot, It magnifies any irregularities and the "dancing swash" can clearly be seen. I can't yet afford a 14MZ, but this is the fastest system you can get, latencys are 20ms ish while the C9 is 120ms !
I have found that with fast pitch changes, I have to make cyclic corrections to compensate for this dancing.
Next year, I plan to build the 600e and use KO2123s on the swash as well as the 14MZ

pusher engine?

has anyone tried adding a ducted fan or turbine engine for thrust. This should be easy to do. I bet you could hit 150!!

Sounds fun..

Everything in Time

Last year it was electric, this year I hope to concentrate more on the glow powered record.

Ducted fan engines are kinda neat, I actually have one in a 90 Xcell.

As far as top speed goes, there is an interesting relationship between speed, induced drag, and parasitic drag.

150? probably not, but 100? That can be done.

My Xero G Electric Raptor has been over 100, but not in a regulated record setting environment.

Turbines? Not yet.

Ducted fan engines? If you can get them geared correctly, and get them to stay together, maybe.

Summer may tell.

Hi Andy,

The Record has been confirmed by the NAA as a United States Record, but the FAI has not finished it up yet.

George,

The speed is the average of two ground speed runs in a measured course.

I do use the Seagull equipment (airspeed) for testing, but it is not recognized as offical for records.

Keep one thing in mind, breaking records is just as much about the record as it is following all the specs. Not over weight, not too much engine, just the right kind of air frame, etc.

That's why some people just don't bother with official record setting.

It's all relative!

Airwolf,

You are absolutely correct.

The same machine that I ran at 121 km/hr, has done 162 km/hr in level flight during testing, and 202km/hr (126 mph) out of a very high, straight down dive.

All of the FAI regs are what make it interesting when setting records.

I would like to see the speed event brought back to the IRCHA events, in the past it was kinda fun!!

Ken, I am working on a V22 osprey tilt rotor. This has ccpm heads. The issue I find is the blades seem to max out regardless of pitch. I am trying to make blades with a twist to them, similar to a prop. The problem is that the inside of the blades stall because the fps is much slower than the tips. Any thoughts? You speed freeks must have come across this issue. What do you do about the blades?
