Has anyone tried the Hughes 500E Funkey on a R30 or R50?

I really like that body style and am considering getting one and sticking a R30 inside it or maybe a 46 or 50, still undecided.

I am interested in any modifications one has to do to the new body to get it to fit and what kind of pipe you have to run inside the fuselage.

I'm mainly worried about the collective pitch arm clearing the top of the canopy. I don't want to cut a hole in it so the pitch arm can clear the canopy at full pitch.

Thanks,

Raymond

I haven't tried a Funkney fuse, but I'm working with a toy fuse from AirCavalry(?) I bought it at ToyRus. Lot cheaper than Funkney. It fit a Concept 30 before I started modifying it to the R30. The C30 had short main frame requiring standoffs to get it up high enough to look right and the rear start was a problem. The R30 with its' start drive on the top and a much higher profile is fitting well so far. Only worries right now are the lannding skegs. They don't look or feel strong enough. If you want pictures let me know.

scale 500 body

DuceCoop,

I am familiar with the body you are talking about. I don't want that style (the 500D) I want the 500E.

About the landing gear being weak, it probably is too weak. Maybe you could get some aluminum ones made for you? Shouldn't cost that much to get done.

Thanks for the input and let us know how it flies. You should upload the pics to your gallery so we can all see it.

thanks,

Raymond

500E

Well, the funky 500E is actually made for the Shuttle series of mechanics. I thought about putting a R30 in one but they might be too big for the fuse. If you do decide to get one, let us know how it goes. Looks like you would have to be the guinnie pig for this one. I'm actually scratch building a 500D/E specifically built for the R46/50. I figure that in the next year, I might have something.
Give it a shot. It cant hurt!

I have fitted a set of Moskito Sport mechanics into a Hughes 500E body. Like you said, the problem is getting the collective pitch lever to clear the canopy. I ended up cuuting a small slot for the lever to clear. It isn`t really noticable and I am told that with the Raptor mechanics you can get away with not cutting if you reduce maximum pitch a couple of degrees, not really a problem with a scale-flying type model. The fuse I used is from Morley helicopters, now taken over by Quick UK. The body is very good quality, polyester glass with u/carriage, clear canopy, mechanics fitting wood-work etc. They come self cloured in either white or red. They only cost about £110.00 in the UK. They were made to fit the Maverick mechanics but they seem big enough to fit most 50 size mechanics. The Moskito goes in with some fiddling. See my gallery for some shots of the fitting and finished heli. It flies ok as well !!

Ducecoop, the landing gear on the 21st Century heli(ultimate soldier) are a bit weak. Inside of the skegs is a hollow spot running the entire length. If you fill it with .150 hollow or solid tubing it stiffens the gear up nicely. The uprights are pretty strong as they are. I saw another conversion where the guy also used mono fishing line tied between the uprights to add strength against flexing outwards but it didnt look good on the ground. You could'nt see it while he was flying but even so, I like mine to look good both static and flying.
