Finally a field box I can be proud of!!

Here is my new & improved version. Much nicer now.

I ripped off the piece of wood the power panel mounts to open up some storage space. Then I reinforced the corners with some square dowels. (Credit to jrvander for the idea)
It's all topped off with a glossy coat of yellow paint

My starter doesn't quite fit on the top shelf because of the divider unless the starter is upside down. I may fix this but it won't be that easy. The divider may just come out all together since I don't really need it.

--------------------------------------

EDIT: 3/28/09
A recent modification:

The handle wasn't exactly secured. It was nothing more than an aluminum pipe held in place by recessed holes on both sides.
My fear was that the handle would come off while carrying the box, spilling the contents and likely breaking the box.

My solution to prevent this from ever happening was to drill 2 holes straight through the box on either side, then I passed a 1/4" threaded rod through along with some flat washers & nuts.

The box feels much sturdier now.

--------------------------------
Here is the "before" version:

3 years is enough time wasted. Taking a break for a while.

Here's a few pics of my setup. It's a Hobbico one that I converted for Heli use. I took off the plane cradles and made a wood frame with clamps that hold the heli down. It works pretty slick! The whole setup works great for what I wanted. It makes for tweeking and tinkering with your heli simple! when it's on the table ,it's at a perfect height to work on it.

I have one still, but I bought it in 1995 or 1996. They were advertised in RCM magazine, which has been out of business for years. I can't remember the name of the guy who made them, but it seems to me he was out of Oregon or Northern Calif. They were expensive in their day and came in two different drawer and shelf configurations and has a little flight box inside that could hold a 12v battery and a power panel and basic tools like ball-link pliers, plug wrench, spare plugs, and a few hex tools and screwdrivers. The legs fold under the box, but it is bulky.
The only way I can think of finding the guy that built them is look through old RCM back issues for his advertisements. He advertised for years. I think he just quit making them.

I had one of those flight boxes also. I think I bought mine in the late 80's. I think it was something like $185 back then.
I heard may years ago the guy stopped making them.
When I sold mine I drew up a complete set of plans.
I have thought about making one many times but have never gotten around to it. Besides, I lost the plans years ago.

That box would most likely cost over $300 today. They were very well built with many parts.

I found who originally made this box, it was made by Custom Woodcraft out of California in the Redding area. I don't know if their still in business.

Does anyone know if their still in business doing other woodwork?

I don't think so. I've seen something like it on airplane website, but can't remember what one. They were a specialty products site.
Here's an Idea I was toying with last winter. Using some scrap wood. Typical flight box with the fuselage holder removed. I've seen fold up wooden tables at Wally world for nine bucks.

This an idea for case than can be used at home and at field :

- 2 IMAX B8 chargers (for 2*7 Amps to charge A123 3S and 6S)
- old 13.8V alim front panel to plug from 13.8V alim or on my car batterie
- seral king of wires
- fan optionnal if requied (alim into case, never used)
