Had the day off - so I picked up a Blade CP from the LHS today, with 3D upgrade kit. I have not yet installed the 3D blades or motor, but I did install the heat sinks.

Step 1 - I applied loctite to my tail motor screws. (thanks for the tip guys!)

Step 2 - I rearranged my spacer/washer setup in the blade grips for the sticky collective issue. I also checked all links and found them to be smooth and slop free. I charged the battery while doing this.

Step 3 - Plug in the heli and ready for flight.... and I had some serious glitching as soon as I armed the heli. When I would even tap on the Tx, the heli would twitch and blades would spin a little. I thought it was crap. I also thought the heli would self destruct or chop my hand off, before I could get it unplugged. Every time I would make a move for it - it would jump!

I called Horizon and they suggested checking the crystals. I took out the Tx crystal, noticed the socket for it looks real cheesy. I spread the legs of the crystal apart a little to give more tension in the socket, and reinstalled it. Glitching went away!

Step 4 - Ready again - Spool up and....... boy is this thing stable! Even in a 5 knot wind, no problem. I hovered for about 5-6 mins, while adjusting all trims. During this period I landed & took off at least 15 times. I hovered in ground effect, maybe 12 inches off the deck for a bit - and also about eye level for awhile.

This is my first 'flown' CP heli, and my first 'flown' tail rotor heli. I have a Trex 450X which I have not yet flown, and a Kyosho Concept SR-K - also not flown. I have been flying a Hirobo Lama SR for a year, and I have almost a year of time on the sim - and I can do anything in the sim, very smoothly (you would hope so after a year).

The sim time paid off - because flying this thing on its maiden was no problem. I do think dual rates are in order, because I did get some wind buffet whilest hovering, and had the opportunity to notice the rates on the stock radio made recovery a little spirited. I also think I would like a modified pitch curve - maybe a little flatter/smoother around hover, as I noticed the heli was very sensitive to pitch inputs in the hover. So I am going to pickup a crystal for use with my Futaba 9CHPS.

For $220 Ready to Fly - including toll free support and probably what will be a solid parts network, this heli purchase is a no brainer!

2nd and 3rd flights - no drama - took it out of the hover and flew some rock solid circuits in front of my house, about 3-4 knot winds. Wish I had more 9.6v batteries.... not ready to swap motors yet and use my 3s lipos.

This thing rocks!

I extended my stock Tx sticks for better control while waiting for a crystal for my Futaba. After unscrewing the sticks to the desired length, just use an allen wrench of the appropriate size to tighten the set screw, which is on top of each stick. This did reduce input sensitivity a good bit.

4th flight - hovered out a pack in my living room - this will make your hands sweat!

5th flight - flew some patterns in front of the house, winds are 6-8 knots & gusty (& really pissing me off) - and this heli is rock solid!!!! Can't wait for dead calm to see just how stable it is.

I did get two or three glitches on the 5th flight, once that dropped collective momentarily (maybe even went negative) and had the heli bounce off the ground from about 4 feet up (no strike). It is a little disconcerting considering my own radio false start - and all the gltiching reports I hear on this forum. I can handle it if I crash with dumb thumbs - but I wont be happy crashing due to glitching.

So I took the Rx crystal out, and gave it the same treatment as my Tx crystal - spreading the legs apart slightly to increase holding tension in the socket. After that, I did not get any more glitches, but I only had a few more minutes in the air.

The stock 9.6v Ni-Mh battery is, in my opinion, marginal at best for the application. It must have a very high internal cell resistance, because even charging at 550mah will make the pack glow red hot. It also doesn't perform well on my computer discharge tests, but I will wait until at least 10 full cycles before I do some serious testing and report the findings - if it hasn't found the bottom of my garbage can by then.

I am pleased with this heli. It is stable on the ground spooling up, with no skid hop or vibration, and no skating around the ground. This is unlike the other Pod & Boom micro helis I have seen - which admittedly isn't many.

The rudder/gyro control could be a little smoother - I wonder how many discreet steps the tail rotor ESC has? Doesn't seem like many...

Ayhow, day 1 with the Blade CP has me all smiles.
