HIROBO Turbulence - SDX - Freya - Sceadu > Does your Freya/Sceadu Evo clutch shaft bends on hard landing?

Hi,
I have flew a Sceadu Evo, X-Spec and Freya and one of the most problematic issue is a bent clutch shaft after a hard landing.

Unlike the clutch assembly of other helicopters, Freya/Sceadu Evo have a clutch shaft extending up to the starter coupler. In a hard landing, this shaft has a high tendency to bend. A bent clutch shaft will result in fuel foaming while idling (because nothing else is rotating). As the headspeed increases, the fuel will not foam and this doesn't affect the flight characteristics. However, in some cases, I have actually seen a bent clutch shaft causing mild vibrations while hovering.

I'm thinking that it might be better to redesign the clutch assembly so that the clutch and the shaft is separated, like in JR helicopters. In addition, a one way bearing can be incorporated to the clutch assembly, doing away with the need to buy a starter shaft with one-way bearing.

Right now, the only solution is to stiffen the lower frames using Carbon Extreme carbon base plates.

For discussion......

After several hard crashes in evo's, freya's and x-spec's I have only bent 1. Also broke the engine crankcase when it bent that shaft. I thing you gotta really plow one in to bend one of those.

I could believe it on the Freya - the lower frames are rather flexible - but the XSpec is all locked up solid

I have slamed my Freya into the ground 1st with no adverse effect - my friend has slamed his Sceadu into the ground more times than I care to count without any ramifications

Not a problem here.

I'm not sure that Hirobo is going to redesign their helis in response to your experience with "hard" landings. Just how hard is hard? Is this something the rest of us would call a really bad crash?

I've crashed a lot of helis in my day. A bent start shaft has never been a problem in any of those wrecks.

A one-way bearing in the heli start shaft will drive up the cost per kit, and adds just one more part to a very simple system that can break and cause problems.

Bent as in maybe 0.1mm out of alignment. This is sufficient to cause some vibes and fuel foaming.

Hardlanding as in a badly done autorotation, for example, but not amounting to a crash.

Just a customer feedback. I'm not going to stop flying my Freya just because of that. But if Hirobo really redesign the clutch assembly, then I will be very pleased and I believe many people will be happier to see that the fuel does not foam while idling.

The other solution is to stiffen up the frame, like I mention earlier.

2 years back when I gave a feedback about the weak spot on the Sceadu tail blade holder, everybody says theirs were working fine. Now, I can read that there are many who changed Sceadu tail blade holder to the beefer Freya tail blade holder.

Oh yes, my mistake, please exclude X-Spec from the list. The carbon lower frame is very very stiff.

Nopes.
Oki bent one (Sceadu 3D) after a f@kked up straight down auto (fall), but I guess that doesnt counts as a hard landing

Hi,

I had a hard crash in my Evo some weeks ago and went to check the clutch/start shaft alignment in the rebuilding process. It was the same as before, 0.0005".

I did manage to turn off the engine before it hit the floor.

I have had a couple of dozen freya crashes without bending the clutch shaft. Just a few questions.

What was the runout before the hard landing.

What is the runout on the crank shaft.

I did not dial indicate the clutch shaft before and after a hard landing but a flying buddy did it and he mentions that the runout is very tiny(~0.1mm).

So....why do I conclude that it is the clutch shaft? Well, if I get a new clutch shaft and replaces the old one, the fuel will not foam at idle.

I don't understand why this problem is only unique in my part of the world. Haha...maybe it's the grass field we fly at. Grass over here are tougher and rougher.

I was staring at my Freya yesterday and I thought could it be that the engine could wriggle about in those elongated mounting holes on the lower frame? Is there a way to lock the engine in place?
