How does it fly with the .70?
Is there a upgrade path to the .90 later on?
Are there any known issue's?
Are there any upgrades that should be purchased up front?

I was going to get the EVO .50 after seeing one fly the other day but then I saw they had this and I was wanting something bigger then my Rappy .50. The price seems within my buget.

You might want to wait until the end of June for the Freya Evo. You can also easily upgrade the 70 version to a 90 by changing the main gear and pinion. I have one with the OS 70 and it will fly just fine for most people, but for hard 3D you should go with a 90.

Freya with an OS 70. There are LOTS of this combo out there, including mine. I'm using a Hatori SB-70 muffler, JR 8103 TX, DS 8231 servos, 401/9254 gyro and TR servo combo. Works great. Thunder Tiger 680 main blades.

It flies well. No complaints. Of course the extra power afforded by a 91 would be nice (more power always seems to be useful).

No real necessary upgrades needed out of the box, though you might consider the T-type collective pitch upgrade for the servo.

The 70 works fine in this heli, and has enough power to make you look good.

The only issue I'm aware of is that you need to pre-thread the holes in the lower ring of the swashplate using a 3mm tap before installing the ball links in the holes.

Power to weight wise, the EVO 50 with an OS 50 SX-H or Hyper will outperform the Freya with the 70.

As far as upgrade path to a 90 -- pick up a new pinion and drop in the 90 and go have fun,

The Freya is easily converted to a 90 machine, parts are readily available.

Kit quality is excellent, as it is with all Hirobo kits. Jeff Green, the MRC rep is second to none when it comes to product support.

Dave,

Stick the Hyper 50 in that Freya. Those engines have so much power according to everything I've read and you won't even need that 91.

If you stick a 91 into a 60/70 Freya you would be well advised to:

Upgrade to the XSpec metal auto hub
Install 3rd bearing block on main mast
Upgrade the plastic main gear to the Delrin version

The push pull collective update as mentioned above is a good idea

I've done all this to mine which I converted from OS61WC2 to OS91SXH - heaps of power and presense in the air now

The Freya is a well sorted model, flies like it was on rails

Dave,

Thank you. The problem with the 90 is the gas cost for me right now. I go through 4 gallons a week right now

I should probably stay with the EVO .50 then wait till later and get the .90 version of the Freya it just seemed HP was giving a good deal on the Eagle Freya that I though it may be a possibility for me.

That is one nice looking ship you have there, I love the yellow..is that easy to see in the sky.

mcoccia -- I use that yellow so I can see what the darn thing is doing! You're right. That particular canopy is painted with Krylon Fusion paint for Plastics. Nothing fancy. 90s certainly go through fuel, though the 50 SX-H isn't what I'd call a miserly motor.

TMoore -- you've heard about those Hypers, too! From what I hear, they put out twice as much horsepower as the standard 50SX-H does, just sitting in the box.

Dave,

I am trying to decide. I am going back and forth between the two. I already own a Rappy .50 and wanted something a little bigger for stability reasons. I am not doing any severe 3D stuff since I can't..well I can I just choose not to at this point. I have a feeling I may goto the Eagle just because it's bigger.

Does the EVO really have more power then the .70 Freya? Actually which one fly's better?

Thanks for you help

Power to weight ratio of the EVO with an OS 50 SX-H compared to the Freya with an OS 70....the EVO wins hands down, no contest.

The EVO 50 is essentially a 30-sized heli (started out in life that way) that's been grown by Hirobo to a 50 power plant. As a result, it has lots of excess power and can put that power to good use.

The Freya, originally designed as a 60-powered heli, starts out bigger, and heavier, than the EVO.

If you've never flown a "big" (60) sized heli, it's hard to describe the feeling. The 30's and 50's are quick, very agile, and somewhat like driving a sports car with a lot of horses under the hood. A 60 size heli just feels more "solid" in the air, much more stable and can generally handle wind better than its smaller counterparts. I guess you can compare it to driving a full-sized car that has adequate power, but not overwhelming power.

If you aren't a 3-D maniac at this point, you might well consider the Freya with a 70, some 680 carbon blades, and an SB-70 or equivalent muffler. The Freya will let you fly at your current skill level very comfortably, yet allow you to advance into 3-D maneuvers as you progress. Of course the EVO will perform the same function, it's just a livelier machine all around. With the 70, the Freya is quite capable of performing some good aerobatic maneuvers, you just have to plan ahead a bit more and understand your power and collective curves. There's a lot to be said for learning power and collective management when you fly. I believe that overall, it makes you a better pilot. If you have tons of excess power, you won't necessarily develop those skills.

Since you have the $$$, seem to have a good price, and the inclination, buying the Freya will not disappoint you. There is always the upgrade path should you advance in your skills and want to begin to really wring out the Freya. Besides a 90 sized motor, you'd simply need to buy the main gear/pinion combo that suits the power band of the motor you choose, and possibly put in the third bearing block upgrade.

I've owned quite a selection of helis over the years. Thirty sized, 50 sized, and 60 sized. One of my all time favorites was a 12-pound plus Schluter Superior with an HP Gold Cup 61. Beautiful flying helicopter. One other that comes to mind was an Xcell with a Supertiger 60 heli engine. It was the equivalent of what is called the "Sport Trainer" at Miniature Aircraft these days. Both were 60 sized machines, and very capable. I've always had a 60 size ship in my arsenal because of the solid feel and smooth handling characteristics.

I own the Freya because I like the feel of a large heli. I own the EVO because I like the advantages of low maintenance and sheer performance. And I own some Caliber 30's because they are just plain enjoyable to fly.

No brainer, you'll be happy either way -- EVO or Freya, but for different reasons.

I could not make up my mind so I just bought both. I take the Freya out on really windy days and the Evo for pretty much most of the time.
