My Posts This: Topic Forum | Power to weight ratio of the EVO with an OS 50 SX-H compared to the Freya with an OS 70....the EVO wins hands down, no contest.
The EVO 50 is essentially a 30-sized heli (started out in life that way) that's been grown by Hirobo to a 50 power plant. As a result, it has lots of excess power and can put that power to good use.
The Freya, originally designed as a 60-powered heli, starts out bigger, and heavier, than the EVO.
If you've never flown a "big" (60) sized heli, it's hard to describe the feeling. The 30's and 50's are quick, very agile, and somewhat like driving a sports car with a lot of horses under the hood. A 60 size heli just feels more "solid" in the air, much more stable and can generally handle wind better than its smaller counterparts. I guess you can compare it to driving a full-sized car that has adequate power, but not overwhelming power.
If you aren't a 3-D maniac at this point, you might well consider the Freya with a 70, some 680 carbon blades, and an SB-70 or equivalent muffler. The Freya will let you fly at your current skill level very comfortably, yet allow you to advance into 3-D maneuvers as you progress. Of course the EVO will perform the same function, it's just a livelier machine all around. With the 70, the Freya is quite capable of performing some good aerobatic maneuvers, you just have to plan ahead a bit more and understand your power and collective curves. There's a lot to be said for learning power and collective management when you fly. I believe that overall, it makes you a better pilot. If you have tons of excess power, you won't necessarily develop those skills.
Since you have the $$$, seem to have a good price, and the inclination, buying the Freya will not disappoint you. There is always the upgrade path should you advance in your skills and want to begin to really wring out the Freya. Besides a 90 sized motor, you'd simply need to buy the main gear/pinion combo that suits the power band of the motor you choose, and possibly put in the third bearing block upgrade.
I've owned quite a selection of helis over the years. Thirty sized, 50 sized, and 60 sized. One of my all time favorites was a 12-pound plus Schluter Superior with an HP Gold Cup 61. Beautiful flying helicopter. One other that comes to mind was an Xcell with a Supertiger 60 heli engine. It was the equivalent of what is called the "Sport Trainer" at Miniature Aircraft these days. Both were 60 sized machines, and very capable. I've always had a 60 size ship in my arsenal because of the solid feel and smooth handling characteristics.
I own the Freya because I like the feel of a large heli. I own the EVO because I like the advantages of low maintenance and sheer performance. And I own some Caliber 30's because they are just plain enjoyable to fly.
