Is anyone changing the damping on the Evo using washers, so to compress the rubber more and stiffen it up ??

Interested to know if this is a possibility, without having to go the Carbon extreme damper route.

I like the feel of what the rubber dampers give, just dont want the overall solid feel of the Extreme carbon dampers (at the same time I dont want to run the risk of a boom strike, doing something wild )

Thanks.

no need to say, its another pointless post by me.

Washers could work fine. Hirobo needs some harder durometer dampeners, as an option. I put a set of CX dampeners in, and didn't like them. I've since gone to the SD-G rotorhead block, with two stock black dampeners per side. No test flying on that set-up yet.

Cheers Al.

No It would not hurt for Hirobo to introduce some dampers.

May try some washers as soon as time permits.

I got CX Dampners and have enjoyed the response....being that I'm still learning I have experienced two boom strikes. The CX Dampners seem to have a little slop in the head, don't know if this is normal or not.

That slop is normal, the delrin is a wee bit smaller than the inside of the yoke. This is to allow the o-rings to work properly when cyclics aren't being used. As for the slop, it is way less than the rubber dampeners fully deflected.

Aren't the stock dampeners 70 durometer? As I think there are 80 durometer ones available. Dunno the p/n.

Dave, I don't care for the stiff head all the time. For stick banging, the CX dampeners are great, but the FFF, big maneuvers suffer.

Oh, I see.

It's sad there is so much compromise between a GOOD setup for 3D and a GOOD setup for smooth and presicion flight that there is no way we can be in both worlds at the same time with a given machine setup. One or the other.

Agreed Dave. I'm hoping the new head block and double stock dampeners will be the ticket.

Al, keep us posted on your setup. Even though I don't fly hard I was thinking on trying that setup out. I haven't bent any spindles yet either but if I have to replave them I might get the hardened one. Chuck

Has anybody noticed some side to side ( lateral) play of the main blade grips with the CX dampeners on the evo ?

That play is necessary and is there by design, it allows the O Rings to damp the hover where as the delrin takes care of damping in hard moves with high loading

Concerned..Help me out here

Guys,

I just finished building mine now your saying I will have a boom strike with the stock dampers? I was under the impression in fact some of you say this will fly better then my Rappy .50. I don't know it appears the Rappy can take more abuse is this case?

When you mention boom strike's what stunts are you doing?

I am concerned here

I've been flying my EVO for over a year and a half (350 flights) with the stock dampeners. I'm not a stick banger, but I'll push it pretty hard sometimes. No boom strikes have ever occured.

As an expiriment, I asked a friend with a lathe to cut down a set of red Raptor dampeners to the same size as EVO dampeners. I installed them 2 weeks ago and since I have 2 EVOs, I left stock dampeners in one and have been comparing them back to back. So far, I like the results. I thought the CX dampeners made it too nervous and touchy and they just didn't fit my flying style. But the Raptor dampeners are just right for me. They're stiffer than stock, but more compliant than CX. I haven't noticed any wobble or excessive touchiness, but it is crisper when I push it a little.

A really good setup would probably be the metal yoke with 4 red Raptor dampeners!

The evo in the stock configuaration will do what ever you want without fear of having a boom strike. It is normally bad setup and piloting skills that will knock the boom off. People run to much pitch and or cyclic with a low head speed and get into trouble with some move and BOOM no more boom. I have seen a boom strike on just about every helicopter out there.

Dokey,

I would think adding washers to the dampers would put some pressure on the radial bearings. Probably wouldn't be the best solution.

I got toe cx dampers to reduce the maintience on the heli. They last many times longer than the stock dampers. They also make tic tocks a bit crisper. The hovering is fine with them.

80' dampers should probably be hard enough. I guess its the plastic yoke flexing some. SD-G with 4x80' or plastic with CX would be stiffer.

Dokey,
I have never tried washers with the stock dampers but have tried modifying the dampers from the Raptor 30/50 (the blue ones) which in flight were almost the same as the Carbon X ones and i didn't get the low auto rotor rpm wobble that i get with the CX's
You could probably buy 4 sets of Raptor dampers for the price of the Carbon X ones .
All i did was reduced the diameter and left them the same length so they get compressed inwards into the head block

Trouble with the stock black dampers is even if you compress them with washers is the centres will still tend to wear slack with the spindle like it does with just the stock one thick washer (i would think).
