HIROBO Turbulence - SDX - Freya - Sceadu > Is this normal for a clutch bell?

Hi! Another question: is it normal that a clutch bell can move about 1mm on the sceadu start shaft??? I had one hot start on my sceadu with 50 hyper some days ago and a plenty of liner was destroyed but it seemed to engage and work well. But after that I started to see some pretty hard vibration (probably, high frequency vibrations) with fuel moving all around the tank! Maybe and I am pretty suru, these vibrations were before that hot start, but after I started to feel more. Finally, I decided to pull the engine out (it was real pain, because I had stripped set screw in a starter coupler!) and noticed, that the clutch bell moves on the start shaft. Maybe it is my source of vibations? I am almost sure, that a fan is balanced (it is a quickuk metal fan), because i had it before, when I had my sceadu in 30 class. Can you also look at that liner, is it ok to use it or not (sorry for the pics)? Anyway, I think I will change the clutch bell, cause of that play on the start shaft.

It's generally recommended to immediately replace a clutch lining that is worn. The problem is that continued use of a worn clutch bell/lining will cause the clutch to spread beyond the spring point, which ruins the clutch. It's hard to see the extent of the liner wear on the photos but since you had a hot start AND ran the clutch afterwards there's a pretty good chance that you'll need a new clutch as well as the liner.

As far as the bell "moving" on the start shaft, remember that the bell is normally held in place by TWO bearings.. one in the bell and the other on the pinion gear. When you removed the engine from the heli, you lost the benefit of the pinion bearing, so the clutch bell will seem loose.

yeah that looks a bit wrong, it's not easy to tell but it looks like there's more liner on one side than on the other, i would think as a result it would lead to the clutch engaging offset and cause the bell to wobble alot which would create high frequency vibration and also destroy your pinion bearing pretty fast.
you may need to buy a new clutch shoe aswell, you'll have to look at it and see if the shoes have spread evenly, if one is spread further out than the other it'd be better to buy a new one than try to bend it back.
you'll need to remove the old liner, remove the clutch from the top of the fan hub, then wrap electrical tape around your clutch twice and
glue the new liner material in (i use 2 hour epoxy for this) and then insert the clutch shoe into the bell and leave the epoxy to cure, the reason for this is because the 2 wraps of electrical tape will set the gap nicely for you.

good luck

Thank you, guys! Now I understood, that I missed these 2 bearings. But you know, one bearing (the smaller one) seem to move just a bit on the shaft too! I can give you a picture of my cluch shoes (sorry for bad pics, was in hurry, because it is getting late here). So far, I will need to replace the liner (not the bell itself) and maybe clutch shoes. Correct? And you told me , that 2 wraps of tape will give a correct gap, but how much exactly (in mm) it should be? I think, that maybe there different kind of electrical tape with different thickness.

And one more question: on your helis, does that bell sits on the start shaft tight or it also moves a bit (I mean when the engine is removed from the heli and without any support from 2 bearings)?

i'm sorry but i really cant tell from the picture of the clutch shoe what kind of shape it's in, is there any way you could post a clearer picture?
also i'm afraid i really cant give you an exact measurement of the liner gap, i've just always used 2 wraps of regular black scotch electrical insulation tape to set it, i'm sure any black electrical tape would do the job, as for your last question, it's nothing to worry about if the bell wobbles a little when you sit it on top of the clutch, once it's mounted in between the 2 bearings all the play will be gone.

No problems, more pictures. I forgot to tell you, that the clutch was engaging a bit even at the lowest rpm. I thought that I need to "run in" the liner a bit, but even after a hot start it was doing that. Before I had that shoes on my .39 irvine engine and it was working ok without engaging the clutch at low rpm. And the liner on the old clutch bell wasn't worn (at least, that old liner looked almost the same, as on the clutch bell I use now, when I just bought it).

you know lookin at that clutch in the second set of pics, it doesn't really look like it's spread unevenly, if it were me i'd probably keep that clutch and just replace the liner, also it's ok for it to grip just a little at idle, mine has since i first got it and it's still going strong after 25 hours use.

Thanks, Gareth! I am going to change my liner first. I just thought, that it is not normal to grip a little at idle, because before with my old engine it didn't do that. But it is really very little, so I think I can live with it. Just one more question: do I need to balance a clutch bell on a high point balance? And one more : do I balance a fan together with a flywheel or I do it separately???

i dont think it'll be necessary to balance the clutch bell on a balancer, but it wouldn't hurt to try it if you've got a way of doing it, personally i would balance the fan with the flywheel as a whole assembly.

good luck
