Hey guys,

No, I'm not asking for the part numbers

My question is for those of you out there who only replaced the main gear and 17T counter gear with the delrin versions. (Instead of the whole ball of wax.) How is the wear between the delrin counter gear and the plastic secondary drive gear over time? Does the fact that one is plastic and one is delrin contribute to any more wear on either gear vs. just having the two of them being of the same material?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

I have noticed a good amount of the Delrin from the counter gear on the black secondary gear. But the counter gear is in good shape.
I have noticed the gears making more noise just recently.

I found that gear profile of counter gear had changed after couple of months of use it.
I changed all main gears(include second one) to delin(POM) after that.

Would you guys suggest getting the whole setup or just the main and counter? I might need to replace mine soon.

The delrin counter gear doesn't cost much, its the installation that's a pain. I would get the lot (I did )

I just went through this verey same issue. After talking to one of the hirobo reps I decided to go ahead and buy the whole assembly. Its $90 for the assembly and $17 or $18 for the counter gear not cheap but should be worth it. I was told that if your looking for quietest and strongest go the whole setup. If your looking for a little more quiet and a little stronger get the main and the counter.

Plus the whole assembly is suposed to speed up for the tail (more tail authority).

As for taking the counter gear off hear is the easy way!

Take out the counter gear assembly shaft and all. Get a Dremel out and cut the counter gear next to the pin almost all the way down to the shaft on both sides. Dont get to close to the shaft dont want to damage it. Next take flat/standard screw driver insert in the grove you just cut and twist. Crack, Snap, and POP its off now its easy to get to the pin. Now install the new stuff.

The delrin counter gear is not the one to speed up the tail. the one above it is.

The real easy way (and you don't destroy anything) is to use a punch, a hammer, a vise and a pair of side cutters. Use the vise to support the smooth part of the gear (where the pin is) than the punch and hammer to get the pin out a bit from the other side, that grab the now protruding part of the pin with the side cutters and sort of pry it out. Works like a charm!

I'm running the Delrin main gears and the regular tail gear (because I can't seem to find a HS that has it in stock !) And I have noticed that the tooth profile has changed. No wear on the delrin gear but the regular one is getting pointier!

As Delrin is a harder compund, its the black gear that will wear.

Delin is not harder, but it is rigid.
I do design plastic gears, and one of reasons that makes Delin gear less moisy is soft material property.

uh, didn't know that. It certainly seems harder.

I also thought it (Delrin) has an intrinsic lubricating/slippery quality

Hmm that punch press and vise Idea would work great also. The only problem for me is I have neither of them. But I do have my handy dandy Dremel and boy is it fun to cut stuff and drill. So thats me and its because thats the only power tool that I have to my name.
