Looks to me like at least twice as much buffer area as we all use at our flying fields and any of the r/c events we attend with our own families.
Just a very unfortunate accident. I'm sure the guy is quite torn up about it and will likely never fly again, hopefully he won't be severely punished on top of it all given the entire situation.

FOO,
Your house is glass!! Think before you throw stones/speak.
Here you are condemning a guy for tring to something nice, albeit dangerous, Flying a demo flight for kids. If it's really that dangerous then hey lets outlaw funflys. There are crowds there too. And of all the people to cast judgment...
Mr. FOOshield I'm going to test fly my heli in the backyard!!!!
It's was a tragic accident. Yes there could have possibly been some more safeguards. But to sit here and bash him into oblivion does no good. Hopefully this will open many eyes in that country. I have a two-year old daughter myself and do not take her to the field do to the numerous unknowns.

A word to the wise ain't necessary. It's the stupid ones that need the advice.

very sad indeed to see a child die or any one even hurt
I hope and believe that the best safeguards were in place
cause accidents happen and hope we all learn from them
In the 1960's a gentleman flew a plank in Yankee Stadium
and lost control due to all the steel structure and a fan died
you think your are in control but just look at all the auto related
deaths on the roads today and cars are as safe as they have
ever been

helicopters

I never did like to see helicopters flying at my club's field. One of the reasons is what the younger generation doesn't seem to understand is the speed, diameter of the blades & the sudden change of direction. A prediction as to where an out of control helicopter will hit the ground is impossible. At 60 MPH a heli moves 88 feet a second, at 70 MPH it's 102 feet. NOW, you also have to enter in the reaction time as to when the pilot figures he has lost control + plus the reaction time of all bystanders. Now things are getting hairy. Osprey

osprey,

The same can be said for airplanes and it applies to both younger and older generations.

I think there is a relatively long list of RC airplane deaths and injuries. So don't get on a high horse. But it is starting to sound like once the facts are out this incident may have just been a very unfortunate accident.

well its different, airshows and fullscale aircraft have very strict rules etc

You know, theres quite a few catastrophic airshows that killed more than just the pilots.

Thats why you get a PCM receiver on a helicopter, so it will lock out and crash in a predicatable pattern. PPM on a helicopter is just stupid IMO.

I agree, if you look at the picture he was at a safe distance and the school had control of the children. If the school took the children to an airport and there was a horific crash which injured a child, would we consider it very bad luck and terribly sad, or would we accuse the school and pilot of dangerous behaviour. Let's keep this in perspective. As a parent I hope my child gets to experience many things in life and we pray they stay safe, but I would not want her kept away from everything that had the most remote danger as that would be a setence to be housebound and an unfulfilled life.

He who dies with the most toys is the winner!

I would rather take a glitch using PPM and isolate the problem instead of masking the problem and getting "lock"ed out and crashing in a "predicatable pattern"

Thats the most absurd thing I've ever read on an internet forum. Again, I'm mainly a Plank flyer that also dabbles in heli's. I'll be the first to admit that the most dangerous person at the field is the new guy with his trainer plane, or the old guy with the plane that should have been thrown out years ago.

More then once I've had to duck to avoid being hit by someones trainer,or some guy that doesn't have control over his Kadet senior. There was a guy about 1 1/2 years ago that got hit by a 150cc powered pitts, luckily it didn't kill him but it did a hell of a number on him. Most of the time guys that are flying Heli's or 3d planes have much better skills.

Sadly this was an accident waiting to happen.

I would imagine that many members of this forum have seen the video

on the internet of a Japanese guy torque rolling a huge petrol powered

Extra300s on a public area completely surrounded by tower blocks.

It made me cringe just to watch it.

Actions like this are begging to turn to horror.

In this case, it did.

No, we don't have to belong to the AMA here either, however to not be a member borders on insanity...

I guess I am insane. What does being a member of AMA have to do with flying safely? Somebody could be a member of AMA just to be able to fly at a sanctioned field or event, and then the rest of the time fly on their own. Frankly, that is the only reason I would have AMA. I have met some of the biggest idiots in my life at "AMA" fields. I don't particularly like to fly with people that I wouldn't normally have anything to do with in any other part of my life. The bottom line is, when you fly, you need to be extremely aware of your surroundings......Idiots are everywhere........also children will come out of nowhere when you are looking in the other direction. I have seen that happen at AMA fields. Just make safety the first priority.

Safe Distance ?

I have a club member w/ abt 30 35 years of flying fixed-wing & an excellent flyer. He now flys Heli's. He takes his Heli out on the field [no fence inbetween] & sets it down & walks backward 12 steps. I counted them. [I walked backward 12 steps & measured the distence, it came out to abt 13 to 16 feet]. Opens the throttle & leaps into the air. I would NEVER try something like that, how abt you guys ? Osprey
