Hi all, I want to share what I am doing to build a remote controlled shutter release system for my new Cyber-shot Pro DSC-V3 Digital Camera, I disassemble a Sony Remote Commander RM-VD1 and took off the 3 micro switches that control shutter release, wide and tele zoom, after some experimentation I found the terminals that needed to be connected to execute the commands, then I connected a RC Switch from http://xoomer.virgilio.it/schieppati.m/ to the shutter release terminals, this electronic switch can be triggered from a stick or switch in the transmitter and works very well, I am able to release the shutter from my transmitter, the tele and wide zoom controls will be controlled by two micro switches(mechanical) and one servo so I can control zoom with the elevator stick, up elevator-wide zoom, down elevator-tele zoom, There is a video switch in the remote commander that activates video in sony video cameras but I will not use it.

I will buy today the micro switches and will post the updates in the project.

Rafael,

I'm a big fan of sony digicams. I have the 717 and have used the 828. I would really like to own a dslr but just haven't made the jump yet. I'd be curious to learn more about what your doing. - Keep up the good work!

rafael,

If all 4 buttons from the remote share the same ground any rc-switch will work. However, if the buttons are multiplexed (like they are in many cases) the outputs of the rc-switch must be opto-isolated. I have developed an opto-isolated switch with 4 outputs which will be able to do all the controls you need (trigger, zoom in/out and video record). Have a look here: http://www.model-gadgets.com/camcopter/

Videostuff and Angelos thanks for your comments, I will keep posting

Angelos, I have reviewed the info on your switch and looks interesting and guess what? I have a spare remote commander that I can use with it, I like the idea of using the remote commander because that way I don’t have to open and solder wires directly to the camera, My question is how do I now if the buttons are multiplexed?

The photo button was a two stage button, 1/2 for focusing, full for trigger, I found both terminals and soldered wires to the full stage circuit, once triggered, the camera focuses and then takes the picture.

The switch I´m using worked ok to take pictures but no in the zoom functions, in zoom if I close the circuit the zoom works ok in the desired direction that’s why I want to use mechanical switches driven by a servo.

I want to clarify that I don’t know much of electronics, I´m a Certified Public Accountant and my very limited electronic knowledge dates back from high school. But I like to learn and to try things so any help you can provide is really appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Additional Feature I forgot to mention!

I forgot to say that the switch I´m using has a feature that permits to program the shutter to automatically trigger it self at any given interval of time to prevent the camera to turn off after some time of inactivity (Auto turn off). In this case the DSC-V3 I´m using powers off after 3 minutes of inactivity but I have programmed the switch to trigger it self every 2 ½ minutes.

Rafael, To play with zoom you will need to use two "virgilio" circuits or may be one of his double ones. Angelos unit has four outputs; Two in an on/off/on configuration for zoom and two working as off/on/on for focus+trigger
It has no auto shoot timmer but you can activate focus only to wake up the camera again.
I dont see in your pics more than one sigle channel "virgilio" unit. Do you have more?
Once you have enough electronic switches you must try different wire combinations to find wich one really works.

Andele compadre, que esto de la electronica es puritito vicio una vez que le tomas el pulso.
Un saludo desde el otro lado del Atlantico.
y mandame un PM si te lias con esto de los interruptores electronicos.

Update

I have installed a micro servo to press two micro switches, and now I can control zoom in and out, I think I have not connected the right terminals in the Sony remote commander because this system does not focus before the shoot, now I´m setting my camera to manual focus to infinity to over come this problem, I have a spare remote comander and I will make some test this week.
