My Posts This: Topic  Forum		I just put a new liner in the non metal bell and it is so close to the clutch that the clutch engages while I am spinning the motor to start it. The rotor blades want to turn and because the clutch is engaging it keeps kiilling the motor before it has a chance to get idling properly (OS 32)

Is there any way to wear down the liner a bit without holding the blades and burning it down? Can the liner be sanded down a bit?
I have a few ideas but need some advice from anyone who has had the same problem.

did you clean out the old bell w/xacto knife and scrape out the jb weld as well, or did you glue the new liner on top of the old?

remember that if you do just "wear" the new liner down to get the proper clearance, you need to do it in such a way that the bell remains balanced. I had read of someone doing it on a lathe... can't think of another way other than running it in the heli.

I've burned up one clutch lining by starting at 1/2 throttle with tx out of reach and I just spent the 15-20 minutes required to scrape everything out with an xacto, the new liner went right in with proper clearance all around.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Sounds like you used too much adhesive when installing the liner. You should slide the clutch into the bell and spin it to be sure everything tolerance wise is ok while the liner is setting up to be sure it has some free play. Also some adhesive may have oozed out from behind the liner at the bottom of the bell making contact with the clutch that will give grief also.Basicly your in a lil trouble without another liner to install or a new bellhousing with a liner already installed. You could start your eng and hold the head firmly while gently adding throttle and then going to idle until it will idle without grabbing it wont hurt anything as long as you dont let it get too hot, you may wanna do it for about 15sec then let it cool down before proceding, this eventually will loosen the clutch/liner. My clutch liner was tight also, making starting a pain inthe butt, until I removed some material. I did it on a lathe. I think I ended up removing ~ten thousandths. I used clearance specs listed in Ray's heli manual, seemed to work well.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Wouldn't sanding it possibly cause the clutch to be not balanced? I mean we struggle to balance the clutch bell and fan... I think that's why people use a lathe.

I personally would scrape it all out and start again.

Dwayne gave me some good advice about putting the liner in - use the JB weld sparingly, evenly, and then put the liner in (make sure it's cut just to length, no overlap) and then put one layer of electrical tape around the clutch and stick it in the bell so that the liner dries evenly with the proper clearance.

Thanks for all the replies.. I probably used a bit too much JB weld. I took down the high spots that were visible where the clutch was grabbing. I carefully sanded with fine sandpaper and gave it a slight hand held burn in and it's fine now Thanks to all.
