My Posts This: Topic  Forum		After I bought a 2mm die & handle (K&J) Andrew pointed out that the only 2mm rod on the hawk is the t/r control rod, the rest are 2.3mm.

I can't find any 2.3 mm die easily, only 2.5mm.

What do you guys do -use 2mm bike spokes to replace the 2.3mm rods and use the 2mm ball links? Or did you find 2.3mm rod stock and a die somewhere?

There is no 2.3mm die at all, only 2mm, 2.5mm,3mm.......
all Century's push rod made by screw rolling machine not cuting die, rolling screw machine can keep thread of the rod perfect in 2.2mm and
keep the rod strong.
By the way, Century rod is 2.2mm not 2.3mm.

Nick,

Century also packages and sells these rods in various lengths. They also have a package with all the lengths (HW3192 - 11 rods) for only $7.95. The packages with various lengths are part number coded as per length e.g. CNLR012 is 12mm in length, the CNLR014 is 14mm in length etc. and come 2 rods per package. and sell for $2.00/Package.

Thanks for the info - I had seen the rods package, and that is probably the simplest thing but now I have this 2mm die and handle

Oldfart or Andrew gave me the part # for the 2mm century ball links which can be used with 2mm bike spokes...I'll probably just buy the spare rods - it's just bad when you need 1 rod, and you have to pay shipping/hand. for it because the LHS don't do century That was my thinking on getting the die.

There are still a lot of manufacturers using 2mm rods even for 60 size machines. So if you wanted to cut your own using Bike spokes and a 2mm die, and attaching them to ball links designed for 2mm threads they would work fine.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Actually, what I find pretty handy is just buying some threaded rods from McMaster-Carr. They have both 2mm and 3mm in 1 meter lengths. Since the whole length is threaded, just cut to size.

I find the 2mm's a bit flimsy. I'd use the 3mm's and then bore out the linkages a bit so they'll fit.

One question - which rocket city ball links would you use with the balls that come w/the Hawk? I think the R/C links come in 2 sizes (I'm referring to the size of the balls themselves not the rod diamater - or is that standard)?

All helis use a standard size ball joint - 4.78mm. It is only the control rod sizes that differ.

or you're wrong.

Take a bunch of balls and ball links from
all the manufacturers and then start mixing
and matching.

You'll instantly see that some combinations are
better than otehrs. Some are quite tight and
some are quite loose. And some are JUST RIGHT (apologies to Goldielocks).

Because the ball links are molded plastic, the manufacturing tolerances cannot be held as accurately as they can for the metal balls. That is not to say that the metal balls themselves are not all EXACTLY the same either. Their tolerances can also result in minor variations. So if you get a ball that has a tolerence to be smaller and a link with a tolerance to be larger then you can have a very loose fit or vice versa.

Also some ball links are molded smaller in order to wear into the proper size, or one can use various techniques to "size" them.

This is why the Rocket City links are so popular. Their molding tolerences over the years have proven to be about the best and their plastic composition about the least for "stretch" wear.

try using Rocket City links on the Robbe balls.

That is a tight fit whereas on Hirobo balls, they
are smoooooooth (although there is a slight
diff between the Shuttle series balls and
the EX series).

And it happens consistently as well as using
other links w/ other balls.

yes, in general, the RC 77E link is great but
not all the time.
