I agree with dnam on that. Hey since your so interested in lightening you Rexy why not make a CF main shaft. It will lighten your load by 10 GRAMS

Yeah, I really like the idea of the CF main shaft as well. Not only is it light, but if you crash it either brakes or stays straight... No need to check by taking it out...

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet but you really should mount that 401 gyro parallel to the main blades. If it's not level it will cause you problems when and if you get into advanced flight.

The CF shaft will splinter in a wreck. It will save your main gear from getting stripped since the carbon gives way. That saves you from replacing those gears. I also never thought about the fact that they cant be bent. Your right its CF its not going to bend. Today I had a boom strike and whacked the CF boom pretty good. I need to learn to stop doing that . Well anyway the CF shaft held up but I bent the feathering shaft pretty good. I was impressed the CF shaft held up. There not a perfect solution but it is a workable alternative with several advantages. CF shafts can be made rather easily for most people. They are cheaper then a stock metal one. They give way easier lessening the damage of from main blade contact with something. I have flown aerobatics with the CF shaft. We have never had one fail in flight. I honestly dont think it can happen as long as its inpsected and changed out once in a while. I have never gotten that far as to worry about stress cracks. I crash often enough so that there life expactancy isnt that long to begin with.

yeah i also wondered on the placement of the 401 gyro and the offset angle but it balances 100% where it is and it really doesnt make a difference as the taill holds fine.

i am quite into advanced flight and so far so good

where would a person get those carbon mainshafts?

Well at this point you have to make them. Do you have a dremel with a cutting disc and a drill? You just cut them to length and drill a hole for the screws. What we do is we take a carbon hollow tube the same diameter of the main shaft. Then we take a CF solid rod that fits in the CF tube. We wick the rod in CA and quickly ram it into the tube. That makes a solid CF rod the same size as the main shaft. Then you cut them down to size. You dont even have to be exact. As long as you drill the holes in the right spot for mounting the head and gear it can stick out the bottom a little. We just take a standard main shaft and align it with a CF shaft we made and use the regular main shaft as a jig to drill the holes in the right spot on the CF one. The dont sell CF solid rods of the same thickness as the main shaft that Im aware of. So you have to make them. Allot of places are starting to carry carbon fiber stock. Invest in a digital caliper so you can make sure you know exactly the size you need. I dont have one and rely on my friend until I can pick up my own. Otherwise I would be providing you with the measurments of the CF stock.

The main shaft is 5mm, so it would be good to get a 5mm diameter CF tube with 1mm wall, then CA a 4mm diameter rod inside. This will indeed be a lot stronger than if only a 5mm rod was used.

Or take it to the grocery store. Go over to the fruit section and weigh it there. Of if that not a good idea stop on by the deli counter and tell em you need 1 lb of T-Rex , then put your heli on the scale. Just an idea. Let us know how it works out.

Yes, you are right! It was late... I posted the correct info with links to where you can buy on another thread earlier, but forgot about this one.
