Hi guys I started working on this little bird and being totally new to electrics i have had a few snags, biggest problem was trying to use align 1900 li-ion battery. After buying a new battery poly quest 1800 11c battery I could finally hover for about 9 minutes, but collective power was a bit sluggish although not bad. anyways decided to put my rex on a diet and here is what I ended up with.

-drilled out tail boom and polished
-cut 1/2" off of the skids
-drilled out skids and polished
-drilled holes in struts
-cut the floor out of the frame
-cut excess material off of the frame
-cut down stab fin
-drilled holes in vertical fin
-converted to eccpm
-took the case off of the 401 gyro
-took the case off of the hitec receiver
-cut out holes on the canopy

I dont have a scale but I can tell you this thing is now solid as a rock, collective power is impressive and I know fly for 12:20 minutes

will post pics

Zip ties weigh more than dental floss.

Wrap dental floss around the wires and tie it off. It is cheaper, lighter and safer for the wires.

removing zip ties

You can also use black kevlar thread - it's used a lot for fishing flies and is (obviously) really strong. Resists heat well. Do an eBay search for "kevlar thread" and you can get a spool of at least 50' for <$5 shipped.

Clever design, especially the canopy, might have to do something like that for better cooling, not to mention the weight savings, very clever, thanks for sharing,

2fast,
I know a guy that did exactly what you did,(drilled holes)he crashed one time and poor guy have to buy a whole new kit.Just a suggestion, fly it stock and if you think its too heavy theres too many ligther micro heli around but mostly they dont really fly well outdoor.Myself i have too many mishap with my Trex but very minimal damage and i fly stock,no upgrade at all.

well i build my helicopters to fly , not to crash so as far as I am concerned the lighter the better, and so far my efforts have been rewarded with a great flying super stable sub micro, longer flight times and a cooler running motor and battery.

Plus knock on wood I have been very fortunate not to crash although I do do keep pushing myself, i usually learn up high and then bring her down.

Your understanding how every little bit helps add up to allot. It always starts out with "well its just not worth it for that little bit of weight savings." But you do it enough times and it adds up. I have found that it is best to stay as close to stock parts as possible. Its very nice work you did but it was probably done over several days. It would be a shame to see your work get smashed in a crash. Sure you could build another one. I would reccomend that you just be very selective about the weight of the electronics you use. I have a 464 gram T-Rex using very light weight everything. I didnt do much to lighten the frame just was carefull about what I added to it. It flies with ease now. When there heavy they are harder to fly. Its like the difference between a 4 seater car with 4 people running a 4 cylcinder. Imagine if you kicked 3 of those people out how much easier the car drives. Same thing with these helis.

Nice heli. Just a little note though. I would definitely recommend getting some clear shrink wrap around the elctrical componets like the gyro and receiver if you have not done so since you took the pictures, as they are really vulnerable as they are now...
