AVEREN,
If you need to test pinions 48 pitch is the closest. And yes there are noisy and will eventually tear up your main gear.
and I tried a 17 tooth ECO 8 gear but it did not seem to mesh nearly as good as the align pinions. just my opinion

This is SO so easy to achieve - one simply saws off a heavy bit!

It looks more like a Shogun than a Trex.

Newbie questions

Okay all, I am new to RR and to heli's but I am quite experienced in E-flight and building GB motors. I am in the process of acquiring a Trek built stock (trading with a buddy) and I plan on building a motor like you guys have discussed. I have ordered a kit to convert it to CCPM (got it from a guy on RCG). My intention is to build it and fly it stock (except for the home built motor) and then later convert it. I have lots of parts to build motors.

My questions are:
1 - At one point, Jared mentioned he would post links for all the stuff to make the heli light. Did you get a chance to do this and I missed it? Please point me to where I can research this.

2 - IIRC, the going advice for the motor is a 12T 26g delta on the 22.7mm stator and 10x4x2 magnets. Is this correct? I have some 10x4x2 magnets but I think they are N50's. I know this will lower the Kv. Is this going to be a problem?

I appreciate the advice.

Joe

I have not tried a 12T 26g delta. I have used a 7 turn 23g delta with great results. I am building 2 more at 7 turns 22g delta (one for a budy).

see here: http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t168163p1/

The 7 turn motor is powerfull, 7 amps at hover, 21 at full pitch/throttle. The 12T will be less and may be a better match to a lightweight setup. (my copter weighes 608g, 21.5oz)

You won't notice any appreciable difference with the N50's, don't wory about it.

Toby,
Are you winding a single strand of 23g 7 turns or are you running 2 strands?

Thanks,
Anthony

Single,

Less winding is alot easier on the fingers. as long as you make sure it is tight everything will fit fine. I have done 9 turns of 22 on a tripple once, it was tight but fit fine.

Toby,
Thanks for the info. I think I will start with a 12T. But I just thought of something. What about using 24g wire instead of 26? I think there should be enough room for 12T with the bigger wire. If I understand things correctly, more copper in the teeth equates to more efficiency. Since the number of turns stays the same, the kv should stay the same. Perhaps I could build two motors, one with 12T of 24g and one with 12T of 26g. I just need to get my friend to complete the trade so I can get a heli to test on. All I have to test with now is props.

12T 24AWG is quite easy joe

here's a pic of my GBx2 with a full 10mm stator stack, 12 Turns 24AWG Delta, 12 mag 6 pole bell 10x4x2 N45. this is slightly hotter than toby's 7Turn 12pole and it has a 3400Kv. a 12Turn Delta, 12 Pole GBx2 will only have a Kv of about 1700-1800, i thought the t-rex needed 3000-3500Kv?

Most of those 12 turns go on very lightweight copters (see thread title).
