I was able to determine that my engine nut had come off earlier and I realized that I never really properly tightened the clutch assembly and the engine nut by removing the back plate from the engine. So, after successfully removing the engine again and tightening this properly I was ready to go fly.

I started the engine and it successfully started and seemed to be running fine. After a minute or so it died. I then attempted to start again and all I could get was the engine turning from the starter. Gas was moving and I could see it trying to get a light but no luck. I thought maybe the glow plug extension was loose or something regarding the glow plug. I couldn't tell. Should I feel heat from somewhere in partcular when the glow plug is properly heating. I think my remote glow plug lighter is screwed up - the end of it has always been a little sticky trying to get on the charger or the glow plug igniter. It appears to be recessed in about 1/4 " when just sitting there.- not flush with the end of the shaft. I tried using a hex adpater to push it in and see if it would come out but it stays in that position. Is there anyway to check this thing?

I never got ignition - it would turn over and I could see fuel exiting the muffler on occasion - but no light.

Any advice - thanks in advance!

Dan

It sounds like you're plug isn't heating up for whatever reason. Could be the plug itself. Take it out and stick it in the plug driver to see if the coils glow red.

Could be your glow driver or remote adapter. Try eliminating the remote adapter and put the driver right on the plug. I've found a lot of adapters have a rather questionable fit on the glow plug. A lot of times what I do is just cut off the wire on the part that's supposed to fit on the plug and replace it with an aligator clip. Just clipping on the end of the glow plug seems more reliable most of the time.

Finally, I highly recommend the MK II Pro Glow Driver which heliproz sells. It's a squarish box with a driver at the end of the wire. It's got an LED on the box showing current draw. So you know when you see 3 or 4 of the lights lit, it's good to go. Too many lights or no lights indicates a problem. Eliminates the guesswork, plus the battery in it has a hefty capacity.

Starting problem

Just a correction on the title: In truth it is a engine starting problem not a heli starting problem, it is not the heli manufacturer that made the engine.

It does sound like your glow plug is not being ignited properly or that your engine is really flooded. Do you use muffler pressure? If so you must be sure that when you fill your tank with fuel that you do not get any raw fuel flowing back into the muffler from the pressure line. If you do all the raw fuel will flow back into the cylinder and you will be flooded.

Pinch the pressure line to keep any further fuel from running into the muffler, pick up the heli and tilt it nose up to drain any remaining fuel that may still be in the muffler, then remove the glow plug (be sure not to loose the washer), turn the engine over with the starterfor about 15 seconds to blow out any excess fuel that may have collected there. Check the glow plug/remote glow attachment/driver for glow. Reinstall the plug, check the engine manual for needle settings and try again.

Thanks - I was able to get it started. My idle settings on the engine were off and I think yesterday I had just flooded it enough not get it to start. It started today and worked great - until a fan blade broke off. Just got a new one and I'm will replace it tonight. It must have been fractured when my engine nut came off during a start last week.

Thanks for your help and tips - and you are right oldfart - it was an engine problem not a Hawk problem.

Thanks
Dan
