Hi!

I am thinking of getting into electric helicopters and buying the T-Rex 450x. However, I don't know what servos, motor, batteries etc. to get. I was hoping to spend not more than $600 less TX/RX. I wan't performance that allow for most 3D and 10-15 min flights.

Any comments will be appreciated!

Thanks,

Jesper

Try this:

Helihobby's website gives a component by component list of "medium" and "high" spec models.

I would say start from there and tailor your model to your needs. Oh, I'd got for HS55's instead of HS50's on your pitch and cyclic though, unless you like buying gear sets!

Ok! Now I know what servos to get!

What about motor, speed control and batteries??

Also, what's a good place to buy from(prefferably in the US or asia)?

Appreciate you guys taking your time!

Two of the popular motors are the Himax 2025-4200, or the Hacker B20-15L. And I think most people use a Phoenix 25amp controller.
You can get the Himax/Phoenix combo from
www.modefosheli.com
for $111.99. Or you can get the Hacker and Phoenix from
www.fxaeromodels.com
There are a number of other motors out there, but I’m starting with the Himax because of it’s lower cost.
$120 for the motor, $75 for the controller.
As for battery, I just ordered a Thunder Power 3s 2100mAh from
www.espritmodel.com. I saw from someone else’s post, that this battery fits the frame w/out modifications, and will get 15 to 20 min of flying time.
I can't coment on performance yet, because I'm still waiting for the motor, controller and battery.

Hope this helps.

Srslamalot, Thanks for your input!

I would really like to know how this combination works for you. Please drop a post when you have flown it!

Also, someone told me the blades that come with the kit are not performing to well. Is this the general opinion? If so what would be a suitable replacement?

Finally, does the electrical components come with the appropriate connectors or does it all have to be soldered together? Do I use a regular ON/OFF switch?

May sound like some dumb questions, but I have never seen one of these helicopers (except on the computer), and I want to make sure that I order all the required components at once....

Thanks,

Jesper

I recomend this as a good electronic package::

4 Futaba S3108s 19.99 each at Towerhobbies - 79.96
CC25 esc + Himaxx 2025/4200 - 111.99
Like90 9 tooth .05 mod pinion - 3.00
Berg 5 DSP + xtal - 52.00
GY240 Gyro - 110.00 ( or the zoom HH gyro from helihobbies for 58.00)
Whip aerial - 10.00
TP 1320s or Polyquest 1500s 50.00 (2100s are way to heavy for an already fat heli)

Misc you will need:

CA medium glue
Locktight for pinion
Deans ultra connectors x 2
Mini zipties

Total including misc 450.00 or so. Assuming you have a lipo charger and TX.

This will be good for light 3d and aerobatics. I dont think anyone has proven a motor combo that gives all out hard core 3d. Some say the align 2800kv on 3s with 13-15 tooth pinion is good. Others report the b20 18l on 4s pack as good. Some say the b20 15l on 3 cell, some say a kv 0f 3500 or so on 3cell.

Its still a new heli, given time the perfect setup will be found. I myself am converting to 90degree ccpm to lose wieght and get rid of the slopy mech mixing. But before I tore it down, the 4200 himaxx on 9 tooth with 90% high gov mode, was giveing me great climbout with little bogging.
