Computer Flight Simulators > Why does the headspeed drop so fast when doing autos in XTR?

It seems like my headspeed is dropping real fast when attempting autos in XTR. I've tried both throttle hold at 20% and cut and they both drop way too fast. Seems like the blades have no momentum keeping them spinning. Any tips?

Ummmm, maybe because there is no wind to keep the blades spinning? Try adding wind and see if it still does it? I'm not even sure there is a setting for wind in XTR? I never checked before.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

There is a setting for windspeed, and I do have it set low, but even if I give it negative pitch while descending, it dosen't seem to keep/bring the headspeed up.

Next chance I have to get on XTR I'll try turning up the windspeed, but I still think it must be something else.

Double check the max. negative pitch during autos in the menu. Sometimes it defaults to only -4 or so.

Even so, once you got the hang of it, you can make them speedup with only -3° negative pitch. It took me some hours to finally get it. Just keep trying and make sure you are already on negative pitch at the moment of throttle cut.

There isn't much inertia on the blades in stock sim form. You can bump it up a little in the settings so it feels more realistic. Bumping up the value in throttle hold doesn't work very well if Reflex is doing the throttle/collective mixing because the governor kicks in and out before you get to right value. If you have your radio do it then it will behave as expected.

There is a nice Fury (DH4) around here somewhere that flies and autos very realistically. The stock heli's had to be tweaked to auto decent.

Maybe it's not extremely realistic (I haven't done autos on the real thing yet) but it's always better to be able to do them under more difficult conditions.

Mike,

Is the "Moment of Inertia" parameter the one I'd want to increase to get more blade inertia? If so, what would be a good starting point?

Thanks,

John

I'm not sure about Reflex, but if its realistic adding moment of inertia would make the rotorblade spin longer after throttlecut, but it will also make it harder to increase the bladespeed with negative pitch, right? High moment of inertia = slower decrease of blade-speed and slower increase of blade-speed.

I just bumped the moment of inertia up slowly until it felt right. It doesn't feel like it spools up slower.

Here is a link to the model thread. This one feels great in Autos IMHO.

Good Luck,

keep it worse than realistic

Part of my job is flying sims a few times a year. It is harder to fly than the real thing. Best way to have it. Tweak it to get it close but don't make it easier than the real thing or you in trouble!
