I'm looking for a quiet exhaust for my Futura SE 1.8 fitted with a Zenoah G23 engine. It came with a Zimmerman stainless steel pipe on it, but it is very noisy. Does anyone know of an exhaust which is very quiet for this engine?

Cheers
Ken

I would say, of the ones I've used, (Miniature tuned muffler, stock muffler, The new Bergen muffler,) that the MA one is the quietist. The Bergen being the most powerful.

M/A 4030 (I think is the part number)is the quietest I've used,Its the one that mounts transverse across the back of the frame with the stainless header, very quiet and smooth.Dont think itll work on the futura frame set though, unless you have the patience,or money to modify it somehow.2nd choice is the Hatori Gas Muffler,its@ 250 bucks,in the US but works well if the frames will take it.Just a suggestion......
Have a great day and good luck in your search....

I bought the Vario Benzin Trainer (stretched version) from Daniel at www.variocanada.com
This bird is running 800mm blades and the new Zenoah RC230 engine. The exhaust system (part number 116/99) is the quietest tuned muffler I've heard. At our last Big Bird fun fly there were guys coming up to me "grinning ear to ear and remarking how quiet the engine was". Some of those airplane guys didn't even like heli's!! The "blades talking" can make more sound than the engine and people like that. Quiet power makes favourable lasting impressions and our hobby needs this kind of exposure.

I'm using this bird for aerial photography and quiet is important. There is no shortage of power either. The Vario Benzin climbs considerably faster with a 5 lb camera on board, than my stock Ergo Z230 gasser does without the camera. The power reserve makes flying safer and more enjoyable.

I don't know if this is the quietest system available but it certainly is ideal for my purposes. Vario has a number of different headers available, something should fit.

Are they the same???

I've done some investigation on these mufflers mentioned here.
The M/A #4030, Zimmerman Z2620X and the Vario 116/95, they all look very similar to each other apart from the mounting brackets and the vario outlet pipe has been moved over to clear the boom supports. I have been told that they are made by the same company probably Zimmerman. Do you agree, or can you verify that they are different. I can get all of the above here in the UK, but i want to make sure i get the quietest one.

PS. Mark222, the part number 116/99 is for a silencer system for a Dauphin. Do you mean 116/95

The Vario 116/95 is the "standard" set up for the Benzin. The 116/99 is an optional Silencer, it does not mount transversly behind the frames like the MA#4030. The 116/99 exhausts further back between the boom supports, the outlet is about 9 inches behind the rear landing gear strut.

Daniel at www.variocanada.com did tests of the 116/95 and the 116/99, he found a 50 rpm rotor speed increase with the 116/99 on a full power climbout, 1220 rpm to 1270rpm. This might not sound like much, but this is with 800mm x 75mm blades.

There is a picture of the heli here: www.variocanada.com/Benzin_Combo.htm

See Kit 8300CS , shows the 116/99 silencer ( black frames not the purple one).

Ken, you are correct. They are made by Zimmerman.

Is there any difference in sound between the 116/95 and 116/99.
According to the Vario part numbers the 116/99 is for the Dauphin boby setup. Doesn't look like it will fit according to the 8300cs pictures.

I haven't heard the 116/95 and cannot comment first hand on the sound difference. When I ordered my Benzin trainer I asked about the "particularly quiet" silencer 116/96 on page 189 of catalogue #6. Vario Canada let me know that the 116/99 was as quiet as the 116/96, the only difference being the angled outlet on the 116/99.

You're right, the 116/99 is used for the Dauphine and also for the Augusta 109.

Here's a link to a picture of me and my bird showing the exhaust side. Hope this helps?

Thanks Mark.

I noticed in your picture your using the standard receiver aerial. I was led to believe that these picked up to much RF noise and you needed to get a whip aerial of some kind. Have you had any problems with this setup?

On the Vario I'm using the metal "suppressed sparkplug cap" and it's working well with the standard antenna, no problems.

On the Bergen gasser and the Ergo Z230 gasser I use the standard rubber plug cap and the Revolution base loaded whip antenna, they work very well, never had a problem.

Z230 and MA Muffler

Guys,
Do you know if the MA Super-insaneo-quiet muffler will fit onto a JR Z230 w/o any mods? And how much power loss/gain should I expect wit it? This is a camera ship and sound is a big issue, as well as the ability to carry a heavy payload.

Also, does anyone has a link as to where I can buy this muffler?

Thanks!
