Main Discussion>Homemade SKid/Strut Protectors |
| DrDan | These are something that I created that really helps to keep the skids and struts from getting messed up during sliding autos. Someone else may have made them before, but I have never seen them on here. These take about 20 minutes all together to make. Also, They should be able to fit the majority of heli's. I am using them on a Raptor 50.Here's how I made them:Buy a peice of 1/2 inch PVC pipe and cut 4 - 2 inch peices.
Drill a 5/18 inch hole in the middle of one side on each of the pieces.
Next, cut a straight line along each of the pieces close to the side of the drilled hole.
Next, cut wedges out of the sides of the line that you cut. This will help you when you slide them on.
Next, slide them on to the struts. Make sure that the big part of the hole goes around the retainer screw. They might be a little tough to get on and off, but the tighter the better. There is virtually no chance of these coming off in flight and while doing some sliding auto's if you keep them tight. Also, an easier way to to get them on is to not try to open them up to get them around the set screw plastic part, but to try to push the PVCup over the screw until it locks into place. Either way will work though. ![]() Here is how they look after about 20 - 30 sliding autos. They hold up remarkably well.
I have tried to make some full length ones, but it was a bit of a chore to drill the holes where they would fit good, and almost impossible to get them on.I hope these will help some of you out.Dr. Dan![]() | ||

| Stet | Not a bad ideaMyself, I wrap the skid at the strut with a thick zip tie in a figure 8 pulled tight. Of course, during sliding autos on the cement it won't hold up as well as your idea, but for general use to protect against vibration on the concrete it gets the job done. If you look at my eolo pic below you can barely see how I do it.![]() keepin' it real | ||

| DrDan | Got to looking though some files and found this old thread. I thought it would be a good idea to bring these up again.I still use these, except I have gotten lazy and haven't been cutting the wedges in them. They go on just fine without them.Dr. Dan | ||
