Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > About to buy a Raptor 50 V2, what else do I need?

I've decided to buy a Raptor 50 V2, probably the Raptor 50V2 PLUS OS 50SXH, w/TT Carbons kit from Heliproz for $549.99, but I'm open to other suggestions on where to buy/best deal etc.

I've flown micro electric helis for about 5-6 months now, but this is my first gas powered RC anything and need to know what to buy along with the Raptor 50.

What servos do you recommend?

What receiver do you recommend?

What battery do you recommend?

What fuel do you recommend to start out with and what are cheap sources of fuel?

What do you recommend as a good electric starter setup?

Glow plugs?

Should I get (do I need) a governor? Benefits?

Is there anything that I might be overlooking?

I have a good radio already (Multiplex Royal EVO 12), and won't be changing that. Other than the radio, I'll be buying everything new and starting from scratch with this heli, and I'd like to do it right the first time and am willing to spend a little extra for better quality/performance/convience/reliability.

Thanks,

John

stuff

the futaba 9252 servos are very nice for the 50v2. If you can't afford these, I would at least get a quality sport servo. Remember, you have alot of money in the air, don't cut with cheap stuff. I am not saying sport servos are cheap, I have used them...but a good digital servo is hard to beat. You can find the 9252 on ebay new for around $65 apiece. You will want three of them and then you will need a gyro and servo. Most like the 401 w/9254 and it performs good.

I would rec. a govenor...as the 50's can be a chore to set the throttle curve up correctly. I like the tjpro.

I would run the os#8

I like 30% coolpower...but here Magnum is just as good if not better and cheaper.

For battery, I run the 1950 AUP cells (4-cell) they are light, can handle fast charging/discharging and I charge after three flights.

As for RX, any quality RX will do. I run PCM, but alot run FM with very good results.

I would rec. the 50v2. Great heli, and cheap to fix (compared to others)

What servos do you recommend?

Pretty much any bb servo will do, digitals will be better (Fut 9252 -- not a futaba pilot so don't know thier designations very well or JR 8231, 8311 ect.). However a good analog servo will be great in there as well without the battery sucking effects of the digitals (for example JR 2721, 4721, 4131 are all very nice servo -- believe the FUT equivilant is a 9202, but im not sure). Just remeber you probably don't need the super-expensive digital servos (though they are nice) and if you do go that route expect to need some hefty batterys.

What receiver do you recommend?

6 channel will do, though you always seem to be running out of channels (my raptor 50 uses 9 channels of a 10 channel Rx) so get a 8-10 channel one. PCM vs FM is up to you, most use PCM though i use an FM Rx in my raptor 30 without problems and don't particularily like PCM -- however some high end servos give off RF so they require PCM (ex JR 8700g TR servo). Your call on that (would recommend you get something that works with your radio )

What battery do you recommend?

If you go all digital servos get a duralite setup, if not a large NiCad will do. I had a 1400mAh Nicad in my analog servoed raptor50 but changed it to a duralite 4000mAh and hav never gotten it to the stop flying voltage in a days outing, probably could get 15-20 flights or more out of it vs the 1-2 with the NiCad (depending on flying style)

What fuel do you recommend to start out with and what are cheap sources of fuel?

15% should do for now, later move on to 30% when you 'need' the extra power -- again depends on flying style. FOr sourcing fuel check out bulk purchases and get together with the local fliers to save some $$.

What do you recommend as a good electric starter setup?

50 isn't that big of engine most anyhting will do.

Glow plugs?

OS #8

Should I get (do I need) a governor? Benefits?

depends on flying style, I wouldn't fly my 50 without it any more as it stops overspeeding when you let off the pitch. There are many pages going over the benifits of governors, a seach will reveile enough to keep you buisy for weeks. This is one of those "nice to have" items, and when you need it you will know that its time to get one.

Don't get carbon fiber blades right away, go with some woodies, as far as a reciever and radio, I reccomend a Jr 8301 for the radio and jr 649 pcm reciever, I have had two of those recievers and have had nothing go wrong with them. 9252 servo's from futaba are good, can't go wrong their.
As far as a glow plug use enya 3 or os 8 both are good, cool power 30% is good fuel.
As for a started, I just us a dewalt drill hehehe works fine for me and has more torque than anything out their.

My final piece of advice is don't crash

yes my drill is battery powered, except that it has enough torque to hurt an engine, so you have to use the little twist thing on the top and make is so that once it hits a cetain torque rating it will slip or you could hurt the engine.

Thanks everyone!

So far I've decided to go with:

Servos:
Futaba S9252 on everything but the tail which will get the
S9254 from my GY-401 gyro. I plan on using the S9252 on the
throttle too, since it seems like the Throttle Jockey Pro likes
fast digital servos.

RX:
I'm probably gonna go with one of the new FMA Co-Pilots that
have the built-in 8ch RX. Seems like a good RX and it gives
me the option of trying the Co-Pilot features. If I don't need/like
the Co-Pilot, I can just turn it off and still use the 8ch RX.

Battery:
I'm leaning toward using a LiPo setup with a regulator. I have a
bunch of LiPo and LiIon batteries around and it seems like a
good choice to go along with the digital servos. I'm probably
gonna go with one of the Duralite regulators. What voltage
would be best to go with?

Starter:
I'm going to use one of my cordless drills. Any tips on a starter
shaft to use with that?

Glow Plugs:
OS #8

Governor:
Looks like I'm gonna go with the Throttle Jockey Pro. Just
about everything I've read says that it's better (faster) than the
Futaba GV-1.

I'm still open to suggestions on just about everything (except the Raptor 50 / OS .50 combo, which I already ordered), but I'll probably be ordering everything else on Monday or Tuesday so I'm shopping for the best prices right now.

If your going to go with the lipo's then make sure you charge them out of the heli. If you are going to buy a 9252 to go on the throttle for use with a throttle jockey you might as well buy a 9253 instead as it will work better. I used one and it was definately the mutz nutz

Stephen,

Thanks for the info. Were you running the S9253 in Super Servo mode?

Yes I ran the 9253 is super servo mode, it is definately a capable servo

I used the 9253 because I had one spare from a previous crash. I'm sure there are more alternatives to use with a tj pro, I guess it's down to your budget and how much you are willing to pay.

those servos for the cyclic will be expensive man... i suggest you use analog servos to same you some big bucjks and get more fuel for that.... 9252s are great but there are analog servos that work almost as well. Just my opinion..

DjLock,
I know they're a little more expensive, but I've talked to several people who said they wished they had used the digitals to start with and were thinking about replacing the S9202s with S9252s.

Looks like I might have to get the S9254 servo for the throttle since it appears that Futaba dosen't make the S9253 anymore. Maybe I can get a deal on a S9253 at my LHS.

It's down to cost, you can get other hi-speed servo's that will do the job on the tj-pro without going to the price of a 9254. Hi-tec do some good speed servos that are quicker than the 9252 and cheaper than the 9254. I can't remember which model is which though, I'll have a look

Stick with all digitals, your bird will feel much better in the air and they have enough power to take you right into 3D. I'd do the TJ PRO and 9254, you'll be very happy with this combo! Battery, any 2 cell li-on/lipoly thats capable of 5 amps continuous will be fine.

You should also consider the OS 60 carb (not sure of part number). I just got a new OS50 hyper with it and the diffrence vs the old OS50 is amazing.

RX....I'd suggest staying away from FMA. Go for the PCM
