My Posts This: Topic Forum | Theres a lot of interest in gliding on RR lately....I don't go out of my way to slope helis anymore because its more of a novelty than a practical way to fly them, but it can be fun sometimes.
Some tips:
Practice your high wind flying. It takes 10-15mph wind on a typical slopeworthy hill (something like a 45 degree face) to just dink around......you should be the kind of pilot that can comfortably fly in 25-30mph winds on flatlands first....know how to launch and land a heli in high winds and be able to auto well.
Launching gliders from helis is fun too. I don't recommend long lining though. Cradling the glider to the landing gear works really well, just make something that will hold and release it.
fwiw there is a photo in my gallery taken by a heli (under power) using slope lift at Palouse falls in 25mph winds....that was some hairy flying, the heli was being kicked up and down 3-4 feet vertically before I could catch up to it, and this was a 10lb 50 size heli....takeoff and landing it safely required lining up with the leeward side of a tree and the flight lasted about 90 seconds...most of which was spent trying to bring it back in! |
