In case if anybody was wondering, here is data for some of the different blades available for Hummingbird and Hornet. Note: Blade length is not measured from edge to edge as you see in some of the blade titles, but rather from the center of the blade root hole to the very end of the trailing edge of the blade. This the actual blade length. Hopefully this will clear up some confusion in determining which blade to buy based on measurements. The numbers were taken prior to any damage.

L: actual length
C: chord width
T: blade thickness

All of this data play a big roll in how well a blade performs in flight. If you have any other blades that are not on this list, feel free to share.

The MS 255s hurt me when they went in.

I had a CNC head that was dremeled incorrectly and had a lot of wobble. It needed to be changed out prior to flight. I was being hard-headed against my better judgement, went out and kicked the heli into idle up on concrete, the heli pitched forward and the blades hit the concrete at 3400rpm. Those blades only had 5 mins of flight time prior to that incident. The higher headspeed accentuated the flaws in my unsmooth headblock. It happened way too fast before I could do anything to react.

The 1st set of like 90 260s (253mm) broke during a 2ft crash. The second set flew into my fingers while in idle up trying to tach the headspeed @ 2650-2850rpm. This was when my heli bit me on the hand. Now i'm on the third set of 260s (253mm)

I just got my helihobby 262s (255mm) in and I might spool them up tomorrow.

Latest break thru

Well the new Helihobby 262s blades flew really well. They rival the MS 255 in performance, but not in durability. These snapped on a tip over. Its good they were only $17.99.

I came up with a new idea. I admit it may sounds crazy, but what if it worked. I going to make my own blades for only under $1.00. How, you ask? I'm going to use wooden rulers with the reinforced metal edge. These should give the blades a forward chordwise CG and well as serve as a protective barrier for the rest of the blade during tip of over and crashes. Of course they will be shrink wrapped for a smooth airfoil. They will also be flat bottoms. The lengths will be match the MS 255mm but with the thickness of 3.45mm, and weight ~12.5g. I think they will work.

The idea came from trying to figure out how to reinforce the leading edges of current blades already on the market with that little metal strip on the front of our old school wooden rulers, then I thought, why not use the rulers themselves as flat bottom stock blades. Walmart, Office Depot, I hope you all stocked up, because I have a feeling these things will be sold out from the little kids school supplies.

This will be a running thread so here we go.

1. Hit up Walmart or your local store for some cheap wood rulers. These were $0.27 at Walmart. You want to grab as many as you can that are not damaged or warpped. Good way to tell, take them to the jewelry counter and simply lay them on the glass. Only get the ones that are flat, because these will help with tracking.

I did get a couple of strange looks while at the jewelry counter. I know they were thinking "What the heck is that cat doing scrutinizing all of those rulers?"

2. Weigh all of them with a 1/10th gram scale.

Here is where it gets to be tricky. After weighing all 13 of these rulers, they were all slightly different ranging from 11.3 - 15.3 grams due to different densities and a variety of wood types. So you will have to try to pair up the closest two and just return those you don't want. Fortunately, I will not have a problem pairing them up since I have so many.

3. Cut your blades down to size and grab some spacers because these blades will are already start at 3.4mm thick and your blade roots are ~5mm. These spacers are the CNC Brass spacers from helihobby, item #HH 1438. But these came off of my cracked set in the post above.

how about paint stir sticks? they are thicker, but dont have any to check. you will have to sand them to give them the proper or desired cord angle. then lighten them up by drilling holes or keep them solid. hows that sound. i even believe they are cheeper than rulers, minus the metal edge.

Rulers rule my friend. The metal edge inserts is for virtual indestructability

I'm tired of spending $18-25 not including shipping for wood blades that last's 1-2 flights. Heck, those from helihobby cracked on a tip-over, those from Like90 snapped while flying into my fingers, another set snapped while landing from a 2 ft in the air. My MS 255 CF lasted 2-3 flights and went into the concrete after pitching forward when going to idle up, Oh by the way those were $57 inc. shipping. This week alone, I have gone through

($50 MS) + ($50 Like90 260s for 2 sets) + $Helihobby 262s @$18 (add $17 for shipping all of the items) = $135 in blades only this week alone during 5-6 flights.

The manufacturers have forced me to make a set of my own for ONLY $0.54 cents for a much more durable set.

Now back to the procedure.

Next you measure.

Cut

Trace pattern

Cut Out Pattern

Remove Metal strip for sanding to desired airfoil.

Replace the strip after roughing with emory board and adding thin CA along the grove. (Very important for safety)

Use drill press to make a 3mm hole. The drill press will help ensure that your blades track properly.

Insert your brass inserts. You can use CA, but slow cure epoxy overnight is preferred.

Apply 1.5'' shrink wrap for more aggressive / consistent airfoil, security and durability.

Get a final weight and check for balance.

Mount your new ZIRBs "Zoom Inspired Ruler Blades" and fly baby.

Oh yeah, peep the lightened flybar paddles.

Disclaimer: Wood Rulers were not initially, nor intentionally created for helicopter use. These modifications/fabrications are strictly experimental and have not being fully tested in all aspects for safety. Should you decide to create these type of wood blades, you do so at your own risk.

Check my gallery for the movie clip of maiden flight.

Nothing special, just for proof that it could be done, and these blades are extremely tough.

For spacers, I think regular washers would shim them up nice.
No absolute need for helihobby spacers here.

Zoom, you sure is one of the biggest contributer to Hummingbird forum.
Century should give you an award of some kind. haha.
Impressive, now I can have really cheap blades to test out my camera ship, just need longer rulers. Thanks a whole bunch man.

Thanks Alanhsu,

I'm just trying return some of the help others on this forum have extended to me.

As you can see, I have gone thru $120 worth of blades this week alone. The ruler thing was out of pure necessity for the old budget.

Thanks

The inserts are CNC brass. I haven't flown inverted yet, I'll definitely get that info posted when I do so. I still have to shrink wrap for smoother airfoil as well as CA or EPOXY the insert for more root support during really high headspeeds.

Are the inserts of your own manufacture or can they be obtained through 3rd party(s).

Many thanks
