Hi optikaman,

I really enjoyed seeing your 500 fly. I have quite a bit of time in the full size series helicopters. The 500 series ships have always been my favorite full size helicopters to operate. Thanks for the demo flight at the gathering Al.

Thank you Al. We all also had a great time their. Watching you and Dan fly was a real thrill for many. I will be looking forward to next year as well. The attendence have been sending us P.M.'s and E mails about the event. So far every one of the corespondence indicates what an "over the top" time each had at the helicopter gathering. And it was the people that made the helicopter gathering a success, not the event itself.

We have also already recieved many P.M.'s and E mails from people who wished they had attended this year. I suspect we are looking at 150 to 200 plus to be in attendence next year.

Nothing like having a smooth and pleasent RC helicopter event. No problems, no hassels, no nonsense. Thanks to you, Dan, and Al Sr. for being one of us guys there. It was out pleasure to have you there with us for the Helicopter Gathering.

OC Bob's Funfly was the best. The only suggestion I have to make it even better is to have it twice a year. Thanks for hosting such a fantastic event.

Thank You for the compliment. We worked hard to make it comfortable and fun for everyone who attended. It appears we hit the mark.

That is what these helicopter events are suppose to be all about anyway.

Thanks O.C. Bob and the rest of the Club for the great time.
Nicest bunch of people any one could meet and great fliers too. The Szabo’s were a real treat as they always are, and thanks Al Sr. for pulling my ticket first. We will have to take you up on your offer for a Sunday morning (after 2:00 P.M. that’s still morning isn’t it). Thanks again, you and your club are very generous.

Hi Beastie,

No one sells heliboy parts any longer. You have to just settle for what you can get here and there. When they are gone they are gone. Back in the 70's I knew Dieter Schulter who built and marketed the heliboy helicopter. I flew many of the demo flights here in the U.S. back then for Dieter with his heliboy design. The heliboy/222 as it was called then, really was the very first helicopter introduced in the 70's that flew good, and was predictably aerobatic as well.

I even contacted Dieter recently to find out if he had any new kits or parts laying around for his old heliboy. He is riding around on his boats enjoying retirement, and has very little to do with the RC helicopter business anymore. He explained his model company sold to another model business in Germany some time ago. And of course he had no parts or kits stashed away for the old heliboy/222.

So when we smash and break the heliboy's all up that is the end of them. Unless you are a die hard fan, and also have access to a full machine shop, it is not prudent to keep a heliboy running today.

Great Event - Great Host

Just returned from my trip to Gathering #2.

I wanted to attend Gathering #1 but was kept from attending by a pounding hurricane last year.

I made up my mine to make this years event. I arrived early in the week and visited with my long lost friend Bob Pinto. Our last contact was in competition at the 1978 Nats in Lake Charles, La. until we renewed our friendship on one of the helicopter forums. We resurrected some of Bob's Raptor 50 Helicopters and got them ready for service and talked about helicopters of years past.

Bob, made last minute preparations for the Gathering which included no entry fee, free food, snacks, drinks for all helicopter participants on both days of the event. Club members helped with preparation of the food and also provided excellent support for the event.

Bob, contacted premiere vendors and had a nice selection of prizes for helicopter pilots attending Gathering #2. Bob also donated a Raptor 50 with a Futaba 9C radio system for the grand prize. Bob even had a hospitality suite in Atlantic City on Saturday night providing free food and drink for all the pilots.

Steve Poretz brought a nice selection of older helicopters and provided nice flight demonstrations of several aircraft including the Dubro Whirly Bird. Bob even brought out an Ole Schluter Heli-Boy looping and rolling it to the crowds delight. He even let the Szabo boys and others get a chance to check out this nostalgia helicopter.

The Szabo boys put on several outstanding flight demonstrations with their Raptor helicopters during the event.

There were over a hundred helicopters at one count and the flight line was full of fliers on a continued basis. The weather was EXCELLENT on Saturday but just a little windy on Sunday. We even had a scale turbine helicopter demonstration.

I took some pictures and will post them in my gallery within the next few days.

I want to personally thank my friend Bob Pinto, his family and his club for a premiere event. Everyone was extremely friendly and the hospitality was second to none.

Can't wait till next year. You Run Ryder guys need to put this on your calendar for a must do event.

Hi John,

Words can not express how good it was to see you again after better then 26 years had past. It is great we went the distance. Many of our friends from the 70's are gone now.

I will make it a point to come down to see you this winter John. Watch out for that hurricane coming to your neck of the woods this time. It looks like the mother load at this point. All my hopes that it moves off course, and completely misses your State. Florida has received quite enough punisment from these things already.

I'll talk to you soon, and once again. All my hopes that the latest storm moves off enough to miss you guys in Florida this time around. I don't believe the computer track models of the latest hurricane are real accurate. This last hurricane is riding a funny pressure pattern. I think this ones track is very unpredictable. Hope it moves off to the west a bit. Best case senario is it turns northeast to completely miss everyone here. It is a pretty safe bet however this won't happen. Best case senario is the force of it begins to decay some.

On to a lighter subject. The Helicopter Gathering is really starting to take off now, so to speak. Attendence was good, and it appeared that everyone who attended had a great time at the event. We have recieved many responses concerning next year's event already. How about all the wonderful fliers that were here? It was a thrill for me just to see them all go at it. Many people today are flying these RC helicopters over the top now, and some of these guys are very very good on the sticks. I was honored to be a part of the Helicopter Gathering. I am also happy you came here to be with us, and me.

Your old pal,

Bob Pinto

My Pal

Bob,

This was by far the best event I have ever attended. I especially enjoyed the few days we shared prior to the event.

There was a lot of talent there. The Szabo Boys and many others put on some very nice flying demonstrations. You even provided a setup clinic for the newbies. I know everyone had a great time.

It was especially nice to meet your family and friends I have heard so much about. FRED the cat was a special treat. He thinks he is a human being. P.S. I was looking at some of the photos I took and thought I saw him on the wall calendar in your office. I will try to post some pictures to my gallery here on RR today or tomorrow.

We were all overwhelmed by your generosity.

Thanks again for a Great Event.

Thanks John,

Fred the cat is a real beauty. We originally got him to control mice around our aircraft buildings. Since then everyone feeds him so dam much, he has become a friend to the mice.

Once in a while I take him along in an airplane for a test flight after an airplane is released from matinence. Most cats go crazy if they go flying, and then get light in an airplane while flying. However, Fred just sits there and whines. I think it simply means he wants more food when we land. The gogles were provided to him by the guys in maintinance.

Thanks for the kind words. Again it was very good to spend time with you again after all these years. See you this winter.

FINALLY!

Well, finally they are done, and they are uploaded! The videos and images I took from the gathering. Sorry it has been so delayed, I have been very busy at work and only had time to edit these videos during my 5 hour flight to Arizona (for work) and 5 hour flight home.

Anyway... Augusto is VERY swamped at work right now, but he had the time to make this folder (the link is not in the main list yet) for the Gathering 2004 videos:

Gathering 2004

Additionally, I took the images I shot along with some of the ones I downloaded from various RR Gallery links and put them up here:

2004 Gathering Images

The only problem with the images is the fact that they are running off my personal web server over a cable connection. To make matters worse -- the basement where the server lives flooded and the dehumidifier, shop vac, etc keep blowing the breaker.. so it may be up,. it may be down. If anyone has 25 megs of webspace available to the link on a reliable server I can send you the entire gallery.. just unzip the file and it's good to go.

Anyway... Im sorry for the delay getting this media out, and I hope you all enjoy!

Please send any questions, comments, requests, or problem reports to me at geoff@rchelicam.com .

Thanks O.C. and the Skyblazers for a WONDERFUL 2004 event!
