raytor: the machine is a full size Ooya cnc vertical mill

Al: as for the frames being aluminum. anyone thats done this before will tell you that aluminum is cheaper to use for the prototype instead of scraping $65.00 worth of cf for each rev change you make. this is a work in progress. not the finished product. the fan housing isnt done yet nor is the landing gear mounted. still in the design stages. lets see your design efforts. or is negative criticism all you can dish out. constructive critisism i can handle, but at least give me a chance to explain before you cut me down. a fair shake is all i ask.

Rstacy/alexander thanks

Hi Cforcht,

I think it great to see private pilots getting into the R&D side of our hobbie. My hat goes off to you all for contributing something back to the sport. It's a disgrace to see people bagging other peoples work. I have yet seen anything im my engineering background go straight from someones head into production not needing modifications or improvements.

When people post pictures of there working progress it is simply that a project that is near completion but not yet finalized.

So if you dont have anything positive to say that could further improve the design PLEASE stay out of the topic.

Cforcht your work looks great.Theres still one positive to aluminium frames if they bend slightly in a crash you can always straighten then unlike G10 or carbon. Theres pros and cons to everything.

Cheers

Nigel

garhide: thanks for the words of encouragment

nigel: you are so right in your statement but most dont understand what it takes to take an idea and make it materialize. these pics are not the first set of frames i have cut. they are actually the 3rd. but i think i have all the problems worked out now. i have some G11 laying around that i was considering using for the next step of the process. but i havent fully committed to it yet. once i have the frames completed then im going to focus on the full metal head parts. i have already drawn them in 3D autocad but havent begun making them yet. i got sidetracked on the frames. and last weekend i got sidetracked again and whipped out the tail cases. but now that i have the tail cases out of my system so i can focus on the frames again. then maybe the head parts but i have an itch to make some aluminum fans too. too many parts too little time. thanks again Craig

Man OH Man do I like that tail case. Keep up the good work. Oh and by the way, let me know when you start producing those tail case in mass production. I also know a guy who runs a powder coating business if you want to stick with aluminum and have them coated.

Very impressive.... Good Work! I am also a Machinest, but have NOT gotten into doing anything like this... maybe I should.
Dont worry about those who "knock" it.... They just WISH they could do as well!
I see Mike Moss made a "good" comment.... NOW you know that someone who "counts", thinks well of your work!
REGARDS!

Hi cforcht,

I think your work is wonderful, great job! It takes skill and motivation to do what you have done, and thats the kind of thing that makes advances. First attempts and new ideas are what make the world go around!

cforcht, your work is nice, no question. But you are simply replacing plastic with aluminum and CF. Your "designs" are designs in how to execute that, not designs that will make it fly better. Take the tail for example. You go to all that effort to replace the tailcase, only to use the same old pitch slider assembly. Why not design a Fury tailcase/pitch assy, that belt drives? Sorry bud, I'm not easily impressed.

That frame kit is looking sweet, would be a real winner in CF i think, and now you have a pattern...

The tailbox is okay, but looks identical to the QWW one, like Al I think a scissor link for the tail pitch slider would be a real winner as well...

Keep up the good work

yes al i understand your point but since i only own a r30 and r50 and have only been in this hobby since dec 2003 i havent accumulated your vast array of experience and knowledge. when i get a little broader horizon in th ehobby i may just do that. but for now im making replacement part \s for some of the crappy plastic stuff. the frame venture was actually started for the purpose of eventually stretching it vetically and horizontally to make my 50 a little larger so it will fit in a 60size agusta cale fuse i got cheap. but i thought it would be a logical first step to make the replacemnt first the its easy to stretch it. but thanks for the pointers. if you can supply me with a pic or something of what you describe id seriously entertain the idea, like i said constructive criticism i can take. besides the initial venture was to do exactly as you said replace the original tail case. but like i also said it a work in progress not the final product.

thanks for all the input guys i dont know if im going to produce them but with enough interest i may. thanks Craig

Great looking parts! I've been having a good time designing and machining my own parts on my non-cnc mill and lathe. I design the parts in CAD, then print them out on label paper. I use the mill to cut the part out of G10 fiberglass, and carefully get the part to shape. Once I have this template I can make an exact copy in carbon fiber in a matter of minutes. I wouldn't dream of wasting cf sheet to make prototype parts.

Again, great job!

Homebrew Raptor Parts

Craig,

First comment: Really nice work!!!!!!!! I wish you were my next door neighbor, I would be over at your place all the time.

Something you "might" want to consider while still in the design stage is to put slots in the side frames to allow for different gearing like the Raptor 60. I haven't done a check at Stock Drive Products on the availability of gearing, but it would be nice if that feature was designed into the side frames while in the prototype stage.

One of the design limitations of the "Plastic Raptor 30/50 series" is that it is limited in the selection of gear ratios. On the Raptor 50 you can use either the 8.5 or the 9.55 ratio. To my knowledge these are the only ones that are commercially available due to the "Plastic molded design" of the frames.

See this post for further information:

Custom Gear Ratio For Raptor 50

Last comment: Really enjoyed looking at the photos ---- Keep up the excellent work.
