Us Kalt owners are in real pain. You might give Rick's RC and see what parts they have left in inventory. They are clearing their Kalt line so act quick you might get lucky, but i am pessimistic for the 60 size parts.

Cyclone not Baron 60

I was informed they might be similar machines. I've just found out that the baron 60 and the cyclone are different machines I have the cyclone.

This is a different Rick's RC. The Rick's RC (also known as Mirage which to my understanding is the corp. now responsible for distribution of the Kalt line and is also owned by the owner of HPI). I called today and they tell me that they have inventory and are trying to decide how to proceed. Eric at Heliproz is waiting on his order to be filled. the number for Rick's 909-296-9968.

I think it's time all of us who fly Kalt helis come to the realization that we are just flat screwed! I firmly believe Kalt is a dead horse, and it's too damn bad!

Please see above, the Rick's is a different Rick's than Ron's business. Also Ron is now clearing out all his Kalt stock. See his info page.

We need parts

Damn Im so scared to fly my heli the way I want to for fear of crashing it. I didnt even take it out of normal mode last weekend I just flew it around all nice and easy and that sucks, I want to have some fun But I also dont want my heli to sit in the shelf for the rest of its life. Maybe we should all come up with a list of other heli parts that will fit in place of Kalt parts maybe if everyone pitched in on it we could get a really good list because Im sure that there are enterchangable parts out there. We just have to find them.

Real Old

donlynn,

That Kalt Cyclone has been out of production for 15-20 years.
If yours had the non-toothed TR drive belt, that was one of the first ones.

Not gonna find any parts for it at suppliers, but someone may have some old stuff for it laying around somewhere.

Good Luck.

OBTY - Are your trying to use that old machine for one of your regular fliers or just as a rare antique?

maybe I'm the rare antique!
hopefully you folk may be able to help with my crash report
Kalt cyclone
Irvine 61 with os 7H carb -goes real sweetly
futaba
TX 8uhp
RX R129dp
3-9202 sevos-roll ,pitch,collective
1-3003 - throttle
1-3001 - tail
gyro G154
battery 4 of 1700mAhr sub C NiCd
multi led type batt monitor
all gear in new condition

I've had the radio gear since I got the jet ranger( approx 5yrs)Tx is the only bit out of the box and I'm a rank beginner on heli's.(been getting my fix on ridge soaring foamys) I was given the heli about one month ago
I have a never flown Hirobo Scale 60 jet ranger DDF SST that came with the RCFS and have been too scared to fly it as I could see the quality in engineering and not in me being heli current
Spent big hours on Dave Brown RCFS then realflight g2 a lot for the last 5yrs
1st flying session wind vrb 3kts
going awesome ,nothing marginal at all. Last flight of the day boom strike on bottom of landing as during session I had changed pitch curve at low stick from 0 to -4 as I wanted auto option as I could see foward flight looming. should of stopped as one doesn't Got tired , too fast a decent and dumped the collective on touchdown .Result new boom (local ali tube-more lead on nose,, few new links, rob the pitch change assy off the jet ranger(I'm not gonna stack it again!) Total fueled weight now ~ 5kg
2nd session wind 3kts
Awesome hover feeling nailed tried a few very successfull slow and gentle 100ft circuts
during very agressive transition to foward flight pirroutting level disk pole foward straightens up, circut and land adjust tail pitch center position, try again same doesn't realy make any difference, flag it ,got away with it this long. Check and tighten belt to 5mm max belt depression between main gear and entry to tail boom
third flying session
wind ~5 gusting 8 knots
either side on, nose in circuts all ok and not too stressfull at all.
I'd be more comfy calling it a loiter rather than a hover if I really try to stare the heli out then the hover seems a little more stable I guess in/out transitional lift, man this stuff is great!!
Previous flying session managed to get head speed a little more stable and control things a little tidier during and at bottom of decent so feeling a little cosier.
6 minutes flying sofar on first tank of the day still a couple of minutes easy, it had done one uncommanded pirrouette which I managed to recover from by poling foward a little circut and land.
I had just turned on the revo function trying to nail the tail during climb and decent phase,so figgured I had it set all wrong so turned revo off, deal with that later !
I can see it would be wise to get current quickly on auto's.
Established in a nice stable 3 foot hover ,full rudder input one way- ok other way -ok (my tail belt tension test) begin gentle climbout poling foward a wee bit entering foward flight -established nicely slowly add collective to full then approx 2-3 seconds later (may have been straight away) at approx 50 feet the wild pirrouetting begins again against the direction of main rotor, unable to stop by poling foward I'm not sure but I think maybe I had the tail gyro set the wrong way or the tail belt to loose
so it sensed yaw acceleration and put input in which increased the yaw
result-
uncontrollable pirouettes approx 2-3 per second at 50 feet
going downwind towards tall trees, with heli slowly rolling off to side impacting at a 90 degree from level attitude still pirouetting unable to establish autorotation( didn't even try as trying to figure out what the truck is going on) before getting heli all trucked up with the dirt.I couldn't see the impact but from flying buddy who did it was the ugliest he had witnessed, this from a person who wrote off/stacked a awesome scale extra.I guess that was supposed to make me feel better -didn't really do it for me.
audio-
waaaaaaaaaaaa wooooar wooar "buggar" wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar "the book didn't say anything about this" wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar wooar WUMMP burrr.that was a shame.

my guess-tail rotor failure or the previously mentioned gyro setting
A auto would have stopped drive to the tail and given a wee bit of yaw stability to enable a controlled landing (theoretically)
worst part was the beginning of it's death dance was in a fresh cow pat then it thrashed about for a wee bit, spending money furiously
similar sensation to being busted by the school principal.
Didn't look like a heli at all on the way home!
Belt tension checked before flight approx 5mm of squeeze ,after crash approx 8 mm but boom bent a wee bit.
Tail blade shaft severed on one half.
Grub screw on tail pitch control wire loose and wire bent ,grub screw checked before flight.
Gyro motor still operating after crash.
any thoughts on the cause will be greatly appreciatted and not taken personally even if the pilot did truck up.

regards Don

Fresh Cow Patties

HA HA I can smell that cow pattie getting whipped into a mess now.

Those smooth TR drive belts take a lot of tension so that they will not slip.
On the one I had back then:
Recomended procedure best I remember:
Have tail boom just loose enough in main frames for it to readily slide back and forth.
Hook a fish scale to rear of boom and get someone to pull about eight pounds tension on belt.
While they hold the tension, tighten up the boom mounting bolts.

The belt will be drum tight, will not slip readily, and rob power from system.
But, that is what you gotta do and the reason that Kalt soon came out with toothed belt mod/upgrade.

Awesome alvinrc
You have answered my tail belt tension question I certainly didn't have it "drum" tight
this will explain my pirrouettes thankyou again ! now I will sleep easier.
any body evey put a fish scale on a lever connected to the tail rotor shaft to work out the load/moment that can be applied b4 slippage?
Also Rick says he has a cyclone 2 do you know if the main gear/tail pulley/one way clutch will mate up to my cyclone 1 if so then should go for toothed belt option
as I can tension the heck out of the of my belt just I was to scared to bust it.

Yep Alvin has the way to do the old smooth belt. I used two people but 8 lbs sounds about right. I have taken the attitude that I am just going to have to fashion my own replacement parts or find suitable substitutes. When / If this becomes unreasonable, I am going to part-out the Merc. Too bad cuz its one cool machine. It gives me an excuse to not be so timid in the air-que sera' sera"!-I'll get a Voyager, Sceadu or Craptor 50. Fortunately the 50 size birds are surfacing as the Hot Rod of the heli world so more kits or conversions will soon appear. Still, I have yet to see a 50 that competes with teh Merc 50. Many of the components of some do but the machines as a whole amazingly don't match up.

Jason,
I will slowly begin gathering dimensional stats on the Merc 50 so we can get a notion as to which parts from other kits we can use. I don't have a stocked Heli shop in town to directly compare, but If the chaps on this site will assist, we can do it. FYI: the Baron has ca. 95% of the same parts. I think the ergo tail rotor and housing is close. The bitch will be finding or modifying for a larger size tail boom. There is just not much space between the upper frames for enlargement. Power train is a totally different story. maybe we get lck and find a near drop in replacement gear, clutch, housing and sprag bearings. I have acces to a lathe and press-possibly a mill, but my time is extremely limited and so are my abilities in this regard. If I get stock for main mast, feathering spindle, and tail rotor I will make 4-6 of each. A teaching/research professorship, wife, child, and one bun in the oven is going to be serious factor.

Cheers
Gi

Kalt Cyclone Parts

Hello Donlynn: I believe I have the main gear you so desperately need. If you can not tell me the part number, then please describe it thoroughly. Tell me outside & inside diameter, thickness, number of teeth, and number of mounting holes. This way I can see if mine matches yours. Please advise. Thanks!
