I took apart the starter and wired the leads directly.

When apart you should grease the dry sleeve bearings (not ball bearing).

Someone should come up with a set of proper ball bearings to make this the ultimate Heli starter.

With twin 1500 7-cell batteries there is ton of power (charge lasts for weeks). It spins faster than normal idle and gives quick starts.

wiring diagram?

Mark, could you also include a basic wiring diagram too? The pictures are great but I can't see clearly how it is wired. Thanks for providing this project. Keep up the good work!

Mark, are related to Tim Allen? Just kidding. Does upping the voltage cause any problems for the starter parts? I know that my TT starter has a plastic contact strip under the start button, and when I stalled the starter the strip melted a bit and I had to put a shim under it the get proper contact back. --------Barry.

related to Tim Allen?

I wish. As Tim would say, what extra voltage? Seriously the extra voltage is working very well. More tork and more speed. No signs of burning out ether.

Your Very Welcome

Yep that's what it looks like. Good pic Mark.
I routed all my connectors between the batteries and the starter in case I drop it. I don't want a busted conn ending my day.

Thanks guys,
I will try to find some of those parts this weekend to make one up. I am tired of using one 12v 7AH gel cell as one utility battery for everything, ie: glow driver, tx and rec. charging, and trying to start one high compression ABC 61 engine.

Happy Flying..

Mark, I got the parts and am about to construct. I compared your previous version with your new one, and I am curious: why did you decide to run the wires along the barrel of the starter in your 2nd version? In the original, all the wires were contained in the back, and it seems as though this would be more convenient / less cluttering.

My starter spends most of it's time sitting on end. Now the wires and connectors do not get smashed.

My version of the Benford Mark, I made this change last summer after installing a YS.80. I found I needed a extra punch. This setup will deliver it. Turns the .80 over like it was a .30 and turns over my OS.32 so fast it's almost funny. Flying a entire weekend is no problem on a charge. No wires to connect and no heavy 7 amp battery to tote around. This starter, a toolbox and a hand fuel pump is all I need. Cutting down the loading and unloading trips to the vehicle was my goal besides creating a high performance starter.

This is the best starter set-up ever. Ive never ran out of juice or not gotten a engine started. Ricks and Heliproz sell all the parts, its a KSJ item.

Can you charge both batteries?

Still haven't gotten around to building one yet but I have a question. Do you have to unplug each battery and charge it separately or are both connected and charged with one plug? Thx

Yes you need to unplug each battery and charge them separately in my case anyway. If you look at the picture of mine you can see a wiring harness you need to make up to let the batteries go from 7.2 to 14.4 volts. It’s very easy to make up the harness. Just use some Deans connectors and I used I believe the Deans Wet Noodle # 12 wire. I picked it all up at the LHS.
