Quick GY601 Gyro setup guide

Connections:

The remote gain input should be connected to a channel that has an easily accesible switch whose ATV can be controlled with the ATV travel menu. This is the switch that will be used to switch between rate mode and heading hold mode.
The Rudder input should be connected to the receiver's rudder channel, the Rudder servo output to the tail servo and the Gyro sensor input to the gyro sensor.

Programming:

From the Normal screen press the + function and follow each step as explained below:

1) Set the Gyro Reverse (GDir) to either normal or reverse by moving the tail to each side and verifying that the reaction of the tail blades would produce a reaction that is the oposite to the movement you're applying to it.

2) Set the Gyro Gain Adjustment to 100. You can control it with the ATV of the channel connected to the gain control input (it is recommended that you set the rudder ATV to 70% initially for rate mode and less than 40% for heading hold or AVCS mode ). Also make sure it reads "A" for Head lock operation and "N" when in rate mode operation (see step 6)

3) Initially Leave the Rudder Control Gain on 100% for left and right rudder stick movement.

4) Initially Leave the Control Delay "I" and "D" on 0%. If you use it this allows you to smooth the start ("I") or end ("D") of the pirouete by adding a delayed start or stop. They can be set independently.

5) If you are having momentaneous "Hunting" when stoping a left pirouete or the helicopter drifts when stoping a right pirouete then set the Gain Tracking to a positive "+" number until it stops. If the opposite happens then set it to a negative "-" setting until it stops doing so. For inital setting you can leave this on 0.

6) Set the operation mode to "CMT". CMT is the mode that allows you to switch between rate gyro and heading hold gyro with the remote gain channel.

7) If you're flying 3D then set the Flight Mode to "3D". If you're flying F3C then set it to "F3C". The F3C mode emphasizes tail suppression and stop. The 3D mode slightly sacrifices tail suppression and stop, but lets you control pirouette speed completely proportional with the rudder stick operation amount and is suitable for 3D flight.

8) If you want adjust the AVCS Sense to increase or decrease the pirouete rate. 100% is about 500 degrees per second. That rate can be increased up to 150% or down to 50%. This is based on you having the recommended 70% initial rudder ATV.

9) Set the Linkage Limit Setting so that there is no binding. Take it to this screen and operate the rudder stick to the left and adjust the rudder servo travel limit by pressing the +/- key so that the servo moves to the maximum linkage position. Repeat the procedure for the right side.

Here's a diagram of the sequence:

Have fun!

Augusto,

I see Jason Krause recommends no more than 37% 'gain' without risking damage to the heli.

Any thoughts on this?

Cheers from NZ!

Talk about a blast from the past. The above post is from November 2001.

Yes JK is referring to the radio's ATV on the gyro's gain channel and that number applies only when using a Futaba. On JRs the percentage is a bit different because JR's ATV go to a max of 150% instead of 140% so the pulse width at 37% is a bit different than the Futaba one. I believe JR users set it at 39-40%.

I myself fly it at 34-35% ATV on my Fury and about 26% max on the X-Spec because it has a much faster tail with much more authority.

Augusto.

Galeries as FAQ

Mark,

I am a new user of this absolutely amazing and outstanding site that you put together.

Would it be possible to organize all of these galeries (if you have more than this awesome one), into a FAQ-like forum? Since everyone has a tendency to think they have the right answer to any question, I make some suggestions:

- no one else posts there but you
- you pick what makes a great answer for an FAQ
- rather than being sticky posts at the top of forums (like the giant servo chart), they are part of a FAQ forum
- people submit questions to the FAQ forum by emailing posting on the main discussion forum...

Thanks for this great site.
